Noise when turining crank

Hello all. I am in the process of swapping in an 04 engine into my 02. I got the upper and lower oil pan taken off of the 04 engine and in the process of removing the timing chain cover to replace the secondary chains as part of a tsb. When rotating the crank to find tdc I hear like a hiss air escaping noise. This noise appears to be coming from the bottom of the block. I could only guess the worse wich is one or more bad pistons rings. Problem is that I dont have much funds. I prefer not to tear the block down to the heads and I am not sure how to check for spent rings. Is this normal to make this hissing when turning the crank? I am trying to do this right while trying to be as cheap as possible. Thanks in advance.

When turning the crank it appears very easy to turn until it gets to the point of hissing and it still turns but as soon as the hissing stops the crank turns more easily. I am not liking what I am thinking. Any insight here from the org please.

Sounds like your spark plugs are still installed and all you hear is the compressoin bleeding thru the ring really slow! That's it....

Yes Spark plugs are still in. just wanted to make sure this is normal. The engine has 70k says the junk yard out of an 04. I doubt I would have piston ring issues but I rather be safe. I ordered a leak down tester and will see what I get.
