Got any pics of the turn signal lit up? Curious b/c I was considering going all black on the turn signal reflector side, but didn't want to lose turn signal light output.

 

Picts for th turn signal lit up are in page 4. They are freaking bright, brighter than all black for sure and more defined than stock chrome for sure

I got these on Ebay for $15 shipped, so I couldn't refuse it. It took me literally 1/2 hour to trim a little, drill few holes to mount it with screw and done. I was planning to mount 2.5" clear lens, but felt too much work needed since the headlight lens have diffuser section that I couldn't get rid off (ruined one good headlight already tried to sand those off).

Yes, I actually like this better than all black, but I like the latest turn signal better. It's really depend on the car color too. If you have Silver or Black car, black headlights look good, but on lighter color, more chrome is better IMO.

Here is that headlights installed in customer car.

 

First time on the road with the headlights. FX-R 2.0 has better beam distribution than 1.1 less streaky in away. It has also thinner color band which makes it less straining IMO. The cut off was a little droopy at the beam end but it's all good IMO. The original FX-R 2.0 was way worse than this. Spent about 4 hours to tweak it to this condition. Hot spot intensity is good, location is good, rotation, vertical, and horizontal adjustment are good also. With this height, you will have about 1/2 up and down, so the stock adjustment is fully functional.

 

Looks great! The corner lights look a little weird though.

 

Does anyone have any pics of how they actually did the cutting/mounting of the FX-R in the 2001 AE headlights? Trying to debate whether its worth doing vs the Mini D2S

 

Thanks! Haha..it does look kinda unusual but functionally I would rather have this than all black. Maybe it looks better without the inside diffuser. I was also thinking of putting Acrylic mirror in some area to help reflect the light, I don't know we'll see. I'll probably endup selling this. I have too many projectors at home and trying to raise money to buy CNC mill.

 

I have a pair of Mini D2S I'm selling for $80 shipped. It has custom foreground limiter already.......

Is it safe to assume that the flat bottom of the reflector is perfectly level in terms of rotational alignment?

 

It's close but not flat 100%. depend on the quality of the headlight also. I did 3 of these kind and everytime is different. Just be ready to adjust it.

 

I like the creativity of the signal lights, but if I'm honest, I agree they just look weird, and the colour seems very yellow instead of amber, maybe it's just the pics?

The rest looks awesome dude your work is incredible.

I'm still open to ideas here......My main concern is not being able to see the turn signal if its all black.

 

I've seen that all black setup on some aftermarket ebay 00-01's. The light is still somewhat bright but it's significantly dimmer than it's chrome counterpart.


I think what makes the turn signal area look weird are those curving streak lines Nissan put on there. Other than that I think your turn signal cover would look fine.

 

That curving line is really the diffuser part of the turn signal. it does help the signal to spread out to all direction. I tried to remove this and wasted a good lens. Believe me, it was impossible to do tis by hand and blending in to the rest of the curve was a royal disaster. Originally I was going with turn signal projector using 2.5" fresnel lens, but because of this dang diffuser, I decided to use something else. I think I'm going to leave the way it is, it looks a little off but functionally it is better than all black which is what I wanted.

 

Took the projectors apart and tried to get it as flat as I can be. Need to ship this before Chrismas, so this is good enough IMO

Camera was dead, so used Iphone which couldn't take the purple/blue band nicely. the middle cut off kinda blur in the picture, but it was dead sharp in real.

Strangely enough, those lines are the only thing I dislike about the 00-01 OEMs. (those lines almost made me go 02-03 OEM instead of retro 4 years ago; that's how unattractive they are to me)

Still struggling with the cut off level. It was dead perfect without the lens. Put everything back, glued the projector, sealed the headlight now the cut off has smiley just on the passenger side on the bottom step.. weird....

I don't know about FX-R, even with E46 that dang adjustment screw still on the way. If you want it to poke out then it will fit, but pushing the projector further back is the problem with most wide flange projector.

Went outside for a drive and snap pict of the cut off. Not entirely happy. It was all good Friday night but it moved once the glue is cured. I had it on bolts and nuts before putting epoxy around the bowl and it still moved. Passenger side needs to be rotated 1-2 degree CCW. Drive side is good. Cut off kinda blurry at 20' but gets sharper and sharper at long distance, I set it at 70-80' to give the sharpest blue thick band. I really don't want to tweak this anymore since I have few retro to do this chrismas break.

I think the most frustrating thing with doing the retro is getting the rotation just right. It always sucks when you have everything sealed up and ready to go and then you realize that you have more tweaking and adjusting to do. Not sure how much of a perfectionist you are but I probably wouldn't even bother if it were that small of a difference and the glue already settled.

I spent hours tweaking the projectors to produce sharp cut off. I spent another couple hours to allign them with no glue (just bolts and buts) and to find out that it still mis-alligned was a defeat honestly after all that work outside in the cold. I'm not perfectionist by any means, just trying to do the best I can really. I have another trick that I want to try to bring it to level, we'll see. I was going to ship it this morning, but I have few days to drive around with it to make sure things are OK.

I do love the way it looks on the car though. It looks clean with projector shroud being the center points and the trun signal chrome on the side. That little white ring and frosted lens look also add a focal point too since it reflect off the chrome also.

Update 12/19/11

Took the passenger side off and fix the rotational issues. Got it very close now. Feel much better now.

It's time for another project. Found a pair (from different source) of G37 projectors and single RX350 Bi-X. Not sure which one is going to be but I'm liking the G37 so far.

Put clear lens thanks to fellow org. Eurodriver. This lens were in his H3 ebay projector headlight. it's more like 3.25" so I know i'm not going to use it unless I can shave it down, but just for fun I slapped it on there. BAM...........It was shockingly good. still have that stupid blocker.

Here is Stock RX350 bi-x. Very even beam pattern. This should come out alive with curved shield and clear lens.

 

Man! and all along I have been blaming the TRS bulbs for that nasty blind spot! Glad you figured it out - I might have to take mine apart just one more time...

Also glad to see those ebay lenses going to good use!

 

Personally not a big fan of the g37's :|

 

Why is that so? any thing I should know about. Looking at the wall and 130' it looks like it has distance throw. More like E46 but with better beam distribution and a little wider.

 

I'm also curious to know what you dislike about them. Other than the blind spot, I am very glad I went with the G37. I get nothing but compliments and envy from everyone who comments on them. Light output is intense, even, long and wide, and the high beam output is absolutely incredible. But then again, it's my one and only retrofit and I have nothing to compare them to, other that other HIDs I encounter on the road.

Also, MSU2000: I don't know if the shields raise and drop to different positions, but on my setup, that blind spot is normally not that bad. However, sometimes it's very pronounced, and other times it's not even there at all.
