Seems strange, but without knowing the Fuel pump arrangement better I cannot say this isn't possible.
it's not uncommon to have no odour, no leaks, and still pull in air which causes the engine to stall/not run, but that is normally an intermittent issue, or the car would chug a bit and TRY to start.
Again, not sure of the setup, but I DO know that you can be pulling air in from a bad fitting, clamp, etc and have no odour or leaking evident. Either way, let's cross our fingers that it was the problem, because you got yourself one heck of a deal from that dealer, and that's a rare thing.
