P0420 is for a bad rear pre-cat. If you look at this link, in the second picture you will see the exhaust system. The part in question which P0420 is referring to is the piece labeled "front exhaust tube assembly" which has the rear precat built into it. However, P0420 will not cause starting issues with your car. It mainly is a silly annoyance.

? Was not sharing that link for a video in it, was only referencing the picture in it so you would know what part you are dealing with.

Have you checked ge battery, and altenator, all the times my Max didnt start in my 5 plus years with 3 Maximas always was dead battery, the ztarter or altenator, never had no issues witb sensors so far(knocks on wood) GL....

Hmm well in most cases that code would not keep the car from starting, I think you might be dealing with multiple issues here. Not quite clear on if you're car is actually starting or not, from what I gathered starting with difficulty, but it might help to get a recording of the noise it is making if you can.

ok guys so to shed some light on this p0420 problem. I had the p0420 problem for the last 7 months Ive owned the maxima. I had to pass inspection so the problem needed to be fixed. It was the precats. That is also the reason for the rattle that the 02 maxima is so notorious for.

Hi Damaris, first off, welcome to the org!
I was thinking that since you're new and you don't really know what's going on, you might want to say what your location is and see if anyone local might be able to come by and help you diagnose a little better. Most everyone is quite helpful. You can post what this person told you, and it might be a lot easier to go from there. Just sayin'!
Oh, and if that isn't possible, try to post a video yourself. It will make it much easier for everyone to help you diagnose the problem.
