ABS Issues

Ok so I've had some ABS issues lately. Every once in a while my ABS light comes on after a self-check. This was I thought due to a R/F ABS sensor. I replaced it and the issue went away for a very long time.

It's returned in the last few months. Off and on. I never got back to it. I've just been dealing with no ABS.

NOW I have a NEW issue, and this one I actually care about. At low speeds (under 6 MPH), sometimes without even braking, my ABS actuates.
At such low speeds when I do brake it pulsates and the ABS is kicking in. Thankfully it's not doing this so strong that it is a serious danger, but it's obviously a big problem.

Right now I'm probably going to fully disconnect it until I can get it diagnosed, but I'm a little lost on where to go.

Some information from the FSM that is directly related:

ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) Operation

-When the vehicle speed is less than 10 km/h (6 MPH) this system does not work.

-for 1 second after turning the ignition switch ON, The system performs another test the first time the vehicle
reaches 6 km/h
(4 MPH). A mechanical noise may be heard as the ABS performs a self-test. This is a normal part of the self-test feature. If a malfunction is found during this check, the ABS warning lamp will come on.

I would randomly guess this is either a TCS, ABS modulator, or wiring issue, but those are all big guesses.
There's nothing in the FSM for my specific issue as far as diagnostics it seems.

Anyone with an idea or that has had this issue and found the problem?

Maybe a different wheel speed sensor is off? You can't pull ABS codes from your reader, can you?

Also, my ABS light is burnt out, which makes this even more difficult to properly assess. I need to get it torn apart and fix the light but I have no time/ambition to fix it, To be perfectly honest.

I'm borderline fine with just disabling the ABS, but ideally I'd like to know what's wrong and fix it.

I don't think you can pull ABS codes from any conventional reader, that's always been my understanding, anyways. Could be wrong, but I always thought this was a dealer-only code read?

Check out the 6th gen forums if you havent already, others and myself have posted numerous threads on the problems with the ABS system. I had an 04 and it became downright dangerous (creeping into traffic at 5mph STANDING on the brake pedal with all my weight to stop the car and ended up pulling the e brake to avoid hitting other cars).

It seemed to be very aggrevated in the cold, it got so bad i anticipated it and drive with my hand on the ebrake until im out on the thruway.

Mind you, this is AFTER a complete ABS acutator replacement (went off every time i hit the brake pedal, EVERY SINGLE TIME) at the cost of $1750 if i can remember (@ 36,XXX mi, dealer covered it out of goodwill)

Fast forward a few years, the hubs were once again letting in more crap to foul out the ABS, this was the time with the scarey incidents, and i ended up this time getting away with "Just" replacing a few sensors for around $500.

I dont trust Nissans ABS for ****, cant believe it hasnt killed someone.

I *had* that problem a few months ago when I went BBK. ABS has since just stopped working. I know/think the issue is one or more of the sensors are dirty, just haven't had the time to clean them up and see if that's the culprit.

Cipher can detect your ABS codes if you're Auto, iirc...doesn't work on Manuals for some reason.
Otherwise make a friend with a tech at your local Nissan dealer and they can pull your ABS codes.

Hmmm ok sounds like a sensor could cause this then? Maybe its time to tug the wheels off and check them out up close

especially with the intermittency, yes. Be sure to move the wheels right and left when inspecting the sensor for frays and breaks.

The ONLY thing I know of that can pull Nissan ABS codes is the consult. I went to my normal wrench to try getting my ABS fixed, no luck there, all they could do is R&R parts to try & fix the problem. Was told the dealer could diagnose it.
