It Takes 5 Mins to Unlock my 2000 SE
Both my keys seem to do a pretty shoddy job unlocking my car. Sometimes I have to stand in the cold for 2 minutes trying to manually unlock it but it feels like the key isnt a match. It will go in and not turn, I just have to keep trying it for a couple minutes.
Then once I get in the next challenge starts. The same thing happens with the ignition.
So both keys have this problem, and both key ports result in the problem.
Whats goin on here boys and how much am I lookin at for a fix once it progresses to the point where it won't unlock/start at all
I just got these keys made and programmed by a nissan dealer

Yes they worked fine for at least a month or 2. This problem has only really been present in the winter. Maybe the cold has something to do with it?
It's also intermittent, some days the keys work fine, some days they take forever

I have the same issue on cold days or sometimes if the battery disconnects, my original key won't work or the spare. It goes in, but doesn't turn. Feels as though its just jammed. How I get it to work is just basically give the lock a couple hard slaps. Usually works right away. Also it happens on the trunk lock.

This kind of thing happened to me on my 97. The key wouldn't turn the lock, I'd have to wiggle it around. I finally looked at the key and realized that instead of having nice sharp points for the tumblers inside the lock, all I had was gently rolling lumps. My key was worn out.
I tried the dealer in order to get a key cut to the code, but was told that Nissan didn't start keeping the codes until the 1998 model. So I went to a locksmith that has the device that can go in the lock and "read" the tumblers. Then they cut me a key. Did it ever look different!
Have the dealer make you a new key (or 2 or 3) and program them to the car.

This happenned to me before, if you can't find that graphite lubricant, just try the Liquidwrench silicone spray. It's really cheap at Home Depot. It should do the trick. Just stick the little tube into the keyhole and spray liberally, you don't have to overdo it, but hust enough to rinse away any debris that might be present. Make sure your window is rolled up when you do it, and have a rag or paper towel to hold under the ignition so it doesn't get on your carpet.
