Engine knocking

So this 2002 maxima has been in the family for a while, it has 139,000 miles
and I have to put in $20 highest grade gas just about everyday just to drive to work and back which is a 40 minute total there and back.
Even with high octane gas the engine still knocks like crazy and if i put in low grade....forget about it...
Ive tried octane boosters from auto zone and it helps very litte.

So a couple questions:
Does anyone have engine knocking problems?
Anything I can do to help fix it without repair?
Is anyone elses car a gas guzzler or is that common with mostly city/town driven maximas

Simply, No.

Gotta pony up some denero if you want to fix the problem. All the high octane gas and octane boosters in the world is not going to fix your problem.

wait you drive 40 mins each way and have to fill up everyday? WTF? Can you put a mileage on that? Cause if youre driving 80 miles each way (120 MPH) that might make sense, but if you are driving at any reasonable highway speed or anywhere near any speed limits that is absurd. I commute more time than that and fill up about once a week

what is $20/gal gas?

what country are you in?

Spark knock or rod knock, huge difference.

Nice catch Gemner. I thought those numbers sounded strange/suspect.

Please take a video so we can better help you with the noise.

Also is it making the noise at idle or just under load?

There can be a few things making the noise but really depends on if its a knock or a ping.

Lastly are there any check engine light codes?

He puts in $20/day for gas which would be about 5 gallons, give or take.

I had knocking, turned out it was my piston ring. After a while it lost complete compression and I had to swap a different engine. Let hope that not you problem.

Do you have to add oil every so often?

he has a 3.5, the answer to whether he has to add oil or not is almost invariably yes but on a 3.5 thats not an indicator of a dying engine unless hes burning a ton of oil

I'd love to push my rev limiter to 6800, or even 7000. I think the VQ can take it without a problem. 7000 rpm may just keep you from having to shift to fourth in the quarter. That'd shave a tenth or two. :-D

She'll do 7100. Technosquare.

General consensus seems to be that # is safe, after that, rod bolts would be a smart/wise investment.

And with those, 7500 seems to be the next general consensus. 1:32 is pretty cool. Only internal mods are said rod bolts.

Sorry OP for the digression, carry on.
