High idle at start up and Drive?

Hey guys...newbie question again, after search came up with different answers. My 2003 GLE is idling at 1250 RPM's when I start it, and its in Park. If I leave it run for about 2-5 minutes...it may drop to 1100 RPM's, but nothing below that. If I then put it into Drive...it surges to about 1250 again for a brief half second, then down to 900 RPMs in Drive. From what I have read...this is high. If I put it back into Park...it surges a bit, then settles at 1000 RPMs. If I once more put it in gear...it is at 900 RPM's. This is for a cold start. I did notice this morning that at a stop light, at operating temp..it was at about 600-700.
Is this normal behavior for this 3.5 engine, or should I look to replace or clean anything to make it idle better or in the normal manufactures range? What is a good or normal idle for these engines at start up and operating temp?
Thanks again for ALL the help...I truly appreciate your expertise!

Typical behavior my friend.
once you're at operating temperature, is when your idle will drop. In your case, you noticed that you sit around 6-700 rpm, which is proper.

Another instance is where I live, when it's around freezing temperature, I usually idle at 1500 until the thermostat starts reading heat, and then I start to gradually drop.

So again, no worries.

Thanks...great to know....especially here in Wisco where its almost always below freezing!
So should the idle decrease a bit as the weather warms up?
Thanks again!
