2000 Nissan maxima start only in Neutral

Today I got into a wreck very minor bumper damage, but anyway when i went to start my car it would not start in P(park) and only starts in neutral.. And the green "P" light only comes on the dash when i wiggle the shifter. Sometimes the lights are incorrect on the dash than what gear it's actually in... Please HELP!

the problem you're having is your neutral safety switch which is mounted on the tranny where the shifter cable is mounted on to the switch, hope your transmission didn't get hit hard.

If you had severe damage to the trans, it wouldn't shift correctly (if it shifted at all) and/or be leaking oil.

Then you move the shift lever, a cable moves an arm on the transmission park/neutral switch. Maybe this arm is bent. When you look at the transmission, the neutral safety switch is facing front on the driver's side.

Try putting some lube on the pivot points. They look pretty dry and crusty.

I know this is an old thread, but did you ever resolve it? I have a similar problem with my 2001 GLE Auto. However, it stopped even starting from Neutral. I just wouldn't start because the indicator stays on "D", even though I can move the actual gear selector throughout the positions.
