Speedometer Not Working *Update*

Hello, I am posting this as a new thread so that if someone else has these issues they can see everything in one place. All of this is a combination of multiple threads and an annoying journey full of lessons. The main issue started with the speedometer, odometer, and cruise control not working. My mechanic said that the speed sensor seemed to be sending the right signal so it must be the instrument cluster. I got a used instrument cluster since it was an easy swap and that did not fix it. The forum results pointed to the Vehicle Speed Sensor on the transmission, this was also a simple enough swap so I did that, and still no luck. So last, I mentioned on the forum that my ABS light was on so someone suggested the ABS Wheel Sensor. That did it! Put in the new sensor and speedo, odometer, and cruise all started working!

Notes:
  • I determined which ABS sensor needed replaced by following the procedure in the service manual BR-48. The version I have says in the text to ground terminal "8". THAT IS NOT CORRECT! The picture shows terminal 9 and that is the correct terminal to ground, NOT 8!
  • The ABS wheel sensor was rusted like crazy and needed to be drilled out. In a perfect world swapping this sensor would take no time, once you have the wheel off there is one bolt and some push in mounts; this is not the case to be prepared. I put rust buster on a few times and tried to be "gentle" but the smallest amount of force snapped the head of the bolt (and the sensor) clean off. I had read in many places that people just friction fit the sensor back in and did not bother with the bolt, I did the same and it seems fine.
I hope this can help someone else shortcut all of the issues I had to get them up and working again!

I just changed the crank sensor on the tranny and it fixed my problem? My speedo didn't work either.

i didn't know the abs wheel sensors had anything to do with it? I removed them on my 96 max.

Starting with the 2002 model, nissan got rid if the VSS and started using the ABS wheel sensors to determine speed.

ah those ABS sensor are very tricky and a byotch to figure out which wheel is acting up or nonfunctioning. Thank goodness I have a 2001 so I don't have to deal with the issues, I yet have not had any issues so far, been solid car for the past 17 years

3.0s are worse. Try to find a used one without ABS light. 3.5s are all fine.
