When I bought my car I wanted to get remote start added.
Dealer told me it would be 550.00 installed.
I felt the price was much to high.
Any options on this ?
Anyone with remote start, how much did you pay ?

i picked up a quote about a month ago and it was no where near that high. if i remember correctly, id say it was around $275 at the most with installation and a bypass for the ignition.

 

JJL I had remote start on my 2001 Altima. I liked having the toy but I wouldn't reccomend it. How ever if you really want remote start 550 ain't bad. I paid 500$ for my remote start it was Viper's 550 or something like that the remote start alone was $250.

They disable your engine immobilizer and put your spare key in the engine since our keys have chips in it the car wouldn't start other wise. They also replaced the factory remotes with viper remotes and you have to pay to have the additonal functions like trunk release and the automatic window roll down features added.

I bought it through Circuit City installion was free and it took about 3hrs to complete the install and they offer a lifetime warranty as well. When I went to trade the car in they voided my warranty though so i got less on the trade.

The 550.00 price was from the nisson dealer, everything would still work.

 

Nissan quoted me $700 and they aren't they were going to get a shop that specialized in remote starters/alarms to do the work. I decided to cut them out of the deal and they took the warranty off the car when I traded it in. If you are going to do it spend the extra $ and go through the dealer because what is more important saving $200 or saving the warranty on your car when you go to trade it in. Remote strat from the deale I think would be a lot safer and would increase the value of your car.

The main concern is not to void the warranty because a properly installed system should not void it. It's more the fact that if you have a electric/electronic problem with your Max, say in the middle of nowhere, Nissan will argue that the system for the third parties vendor is the problem, and that same third parties would argue that it it Nissan's problem. Do you see the catch here!!!

Should it happen only once, like it did to me 3 years ago with a car only 2 days old (!) in a parking lot of a golf course at 11pm, you will be happy to have only one number to call (and to give whatever insults you want).....

 

I agree with you. i've had runins withthe dealer and peopel that installed aftermarket stuff on my cars in the past. I the long run it wasn't worth the few dollars I saved by not going thriugh the dealer to get stuff fixed. minor things like tint and wheels is okay but I wouldn't trust any shop with my engine.

Nope... I had mine installed by Nissan's dealer before delivery (last spring). Since then not a single problem with it. If a dealer say so, it's either because he dont want to install one, or because he doesnt have the people to do it (shop = less benefits)...

 

I have a 99 with the key immobilizer system. The basic remote start was 199 installed. I had to add an extra 40 bucks for the key bypass. Total installed cost 2 years ago was 239.

My other 1/2 has a 2001 330, we just had the remote start put in that about 2 weeks ago. Same ignition immobilizer system as in our cars. Total installed price was 275.

If your paying more then 300 bucks to have a remote start installed, go to a different shop, your getting ripped off.

 

Clifford Solaris Alarm with remote start here....has standard door/trunk/hood pins switches as well as user adjustable shock sensor, low battery voltage turn on, low temp (< 15 degrees) turn on, ignition immobolizer, BlackJack anti-carjacking system...oh yeah and remote start....I think it was 550 or so installed and it works in conjunction with the factory alarm. No problems with the system at all yet; in fact I've had a warranty claim since it was installed when my trunk would pop everytime the door was opened. They saw the aftermarket alarm and called the installer to understand what they had done then went ahead and replaced the defective Nissan part with no more troubles.....If you're worried about warranty at trade in time, any reputable aftermarket shop should be more than willing to remove the system at that time; I know mine is. yep that's the same quote i rceived. I'm surprise they didn't try to get you to buy LOWJACK.

 

I'm confused about the "new keys" thing!!!!!! I didnt not had to change my keys. They only gave me a new set of remotes (2). My original remotes still works, except for a few differences.... You should ask another dealer, I think your's is not that honest with you....

First I would like to say that nissan charges so much cuz they are not the ones putting it on. They take it to a shop pay there few and then you pay nissans fee too.

A remote start does not void any warrentys, stop being paranoid.

550 alarm with remotestart is good lower means less quality.

 

Do you have remote start? If you do go by your local dealer, and ask them if you trade your car in will it still have a warranty?

 

Why would you let the dealer put a remote start in? Do you really think THE DEALER is installing it? Think again - they contract out a local shop to do the install. Then they add their cost for being the middle man and YOU pay the bill.

Don't let the dealer rip you off with $hit like that. Dealers do not do paintless dent removals, custom electronic installations (remote start) or most body work (some do have small shops). It's all contracted out. And you as the customer wind up paying the shop PLUS the middle man (the dealer) for the work.

If your thinking it will void your warranty, wrong again. There are laws to protect you under circumstances like that. Same goes for the mods you put in your car. They do not void the vehicle warranty. Unless they can actually prove that what you did resulted in the failure your trying to collect upon.

But in my case so much other stuff is done i have no warrentys. Basically cuz ive replaced everything. But im me. rs will not void a warrenty to any dealer that has a brain.

 

It void the warranty on my 2001 SE Altima. I took my Max in for my free Detailing and I went looking on the lot for my Altima and I saw it and it said AS IS NO WARRANTY. Beside the remote start all I had on it was a Brush Aluminum dashkit and a Levoc Automatic Shifter, and tint. I met the person that bought my car she works near where I work and she confirmed the car has no more warranty w/less than 15K mi.

I wouldn't deter anyone from getting remote start, and like I have said before you may pay more from the dealer who of course got a specailty shop to do the work for you. How ever if you go to buy a used car would you rather buy the car that Has "Dealer installed remote start" or one that says this remote start was installed at Circuit City we won't cover it if anything goes wrong.

 

Or right let me say this ,if the guy says it voided his warranty ! Well he has know reason to lie about it
Next thing if putting in a ,lets say a viper system disables the engine immobilizer system that sucks big time.
This is not a chance the I want to take.I guess I could just call the dealer to see if the warranty would be voided. I know my friend had it done to her grand pre and now has to fumble around with two remotes,and that sucks . The dealer its all on one remote.
I would just like to know if any one got this done at the dealer and how much did it cost.
Also if you get it done at the dealer it is under life time warranty know matter who did the job

 

I can't talk to this guy's experience, but just installing a remote start should not void a warranty by itself. Maybe they did in this case and who really knows the dealer's reasoning. What I do know is mine was an aftermarket installed Clifford unit, it did NOT disable the Immobilizer and only one remote is required as it has all the functions of the Nissan one plus dozens more. $550 installed with lifetime warranty for installation as well as Clifford's theft guarantee. Hope this helps...

 

I got it done AT the dealer, before picking up the car. My remote systme IS included in the warranty (I took the extended one (6 years) I do so much mileage !!!). That means that the remote system IS under warranty for the next 6 years or 160000Km (100000m). No question asked, no problemo my friend. Sure I paid more than an independant shop, but who cares... Peace of mind has better value than money.

BTW, I'm not a genius or an expert like so many of you (but I wish someday I will become one) and I cannot aford getting stuck on a desert parking lot, at 11pm like it already happened to me. No way!!!

 

I'm sorry it voided your warrenty. But you got screwed. It' can't legally. And installing the remote start does not disable the imobilizer.

 

Okay thanks but in the case of the Viper 550 alarm that I had the engine immobilizer was disabled they had to disable it because the can use the remote start with the engine immobilizer. How can you tell me that they didn't disable my engine immobilizer were you there? Don't mean to flame you but you can't tell me what happened you weren't there thanks. It doesn't both me that they voided the warranty I'm not the one driving the car. I have no Idea why they voided all I know is that they did. The car was only 10months old and I had performed all the scheduled maintence on time by nissan dealers and the car had less than 15K mi. I got 14K for the car I owed 15K on the car and the extra 1K was added to the price of my Max. I put down a down a huge down payment so it doesn't bother me what they did with the warranty.

 

Again it looks like you got screwed. Which sucks. I'm not really sure how they could have completley illimanted the imobilizer. You do have to stick the key under the dash but that doesn't mean it's been disabled completly, you still need the key to start the car.

 

Yea I think you're right; more than likely they didn't explain properly in detail how the key under the dash bypasses the Immobilizer without eliminating it. One way to check might be to get an uncoded key and try to start his car with it....If it starts then for some screwed up reason they eliminated it. My guess (hope) is that it is only bypassed for the duration the car is remotely started until the key is inserted.

 

Thanks for the simpathy but I no longer own the car feel sorry for the person that does. Yes the key w/code is needed to put the car in drive. I can't think of the details as to why the engine immobilizer was disabled, but I do remember Circuit City stating they would have to disable it as part of the Remote sart and alarm installation. I will call them to figure out the details.

I did talk to the person that bought the car and she said that they were tring to sell her the car w/o the warranty, but she told them she would not buy the car unless they agreed to warranty it so, the car does have a warranty now according to her. Not sure but again that's not my problem anymore.
