If i do it when nothing is wrong...does it hurt anything? will it change something once i reset it?

 

it just sets everything back to the way it was...like time gets messed up and your radio settings thas all

Actually, your ECU does learn your driving habits and it adjusts itself accordingly. In a recent writeup in Sport Compact Car on a stock Subaru WRX, the WRX lost 10 hp when the ECU was reset. The reason was because the vehicle had been driven for several days through Wyoming and Montana at speeds consistently exceeding 135 mph! When the ECU was reset, the default driving conditions were restored. There's a dyno plot in the article that proves the point.

The moral of the story is, the harder you thrash your engine, the more power it will generate. The downside, of course, is greater wear and tear on the engine. But hey, it's covered under warranty, right?

Right. Which means that you get to teach it all over again.

 

i see that the tranny doesn't act the same as when i first had the car...it changed, the way it moves gears and how it reacts and all. So if i reset it, will it change again and the MPG will go up? because the engine is using less fuel for harsh driving?

i dunno why but ever since i reseted my ECU my MPG got horrible....its wierd....y2kse why do you think its doing that?

 

opposite for me...before ecu reset 18.2-18.3 now about 21.0 How come max's mpg varies so much. i heard of some people getting 27-28 mpg or even more.

I could say "it should" and be dead wrong, 2001SE. I'm not an engineer and I really don't know how the ECU goes about the process of learning your driving habits. I just know that it does go through that process.

i started noticeing it a few thousands miles after i drove it.

i am getting now usually around 18mpg like all the time mixed highway and city. should i reset it and see if i get a better gas mileage?

Go ahead and reset it, 2001SE. You probably won't notice any significant difference in power.

 

alright man...so, its just disconnecting the negitive cable from the battery for a few hours(i'll leave it over night)?

 

If you want to make certain that your ECU is completely reset, you'll need to leave the battery disconnected for 24 hours. If you can't do that, at least disconnect it overnight.

I've heard it's best to disconnect the positive terminal. But I've always just disconnected the negative terminal.
