nothing here... at best i only get a hard shift (sudden burst forward) from 1-2 early in the morning when the tranny is still cold.

incidentally, just month's ago i kept complaining about a slip from 1-2. now it actually shifts hard. go figure

it doesnt go *thunk* even once in a while when you manually shift?

should i be concerned about this?

i dont manually shift often. just whenever i feel like doing a little spirited driving, like today, i was manually shifting to hit some speed to dry off excess water off the car after a carwash and my tranny went *thunk*.

hm.

the thunk at redline...its cuz its shifting hard....and it usually happens when its JUST before redline...like almost off the rev limiter but not.....but other thunks i dont have reason for....cuz when i manually shift at redline....if i get it perfect...like the instant before rev limiter i get that thunk.

Mine does that and I'm not even manually shifting. Sometimes I'll get on the gas and see some brake lights, let go and get on it again and at that moment it'll hesitate and thunk.

yeah i have it big time. down shifts occassionally, and definitly right at redline, also on a drop to 1st or 2nd and a jump on the throttle(love the power on the down shift) *probably not the most advisable thing to do but...its what i do

downshift to 1st from low speeds is really noticable. it quite bothers me, is it somethign wrong with the gear? cuz its such a harsh downshift, every passanger in the car needs a neck surgery after it

u got it perfect then, i had the sme problem, its just timing if u get it right i will pull all the way to 6600rpms and jsut go into the next gear and run hard to redline again. but if u slightly pass is yeah it goes thunk as well. i was told by some1 that it was wheelhop or something but i dont think so.

The thuddd is from the car hitting rev limiter then as the revs drop below limiter the motor coming to life again. I have done it when manually shifting and it is one of the worst feeling/sounding things, it is not good for your car.

There is a TSB for 5th Gen maximas with A/T. Nissan ****ed up the A/T and you have to get it fixed. Look in TSB post.

The link isn't working

The above link I got from the Technical Service Bullentin Post it is the second post there.

But it must be very outdated. Maybe someone has a link to th 5th gen A/T auto slippage they can post that results in this *thud* everyone is guessing about.

My transmission sucks. It is crazy...during 10-15MPH going thru parking lots it can't F'ing decide what gear it wants to be in. Then, it will just down shift and surge forward making me look like an *** with people in the car. I approached two dealers about the issue and they said its 'normal'. Normal my ***. I just will never get an auto tranny again....well, until I get my new MB 500SL

this is also true for my tranny.

when i manually shift it right before redline... it goes:

*thunk*

catches the gear.

*i speed off*

i suppose if everyone elses car is behaving the same way... it's okay?

Maybe this has been said already in this thread, but if you want to shift @ redline, just get the manual tranny. Automatics are not made for that, @ least the Maxima's isn't, as you can tell.

are you saying that A/T maxima owners have no right to go to the track?

because the maximas A/T wasnt "made" to be manually shifted?

i think that thud is because when it shifts the tranny doesnt go right into gear so the rpms are up and then it catches causing a little surge kinda like a neutral shot. this automatic sux and i really wish i got a 5 speed. now that its humid out around here, my tranny shifts mint. it must like this humid weather....but i dunno

This has happened to me twice during manually shifting my car. Darn auto is just slow, at least for my taste. It doesn't seem the same anymore. My question is what is happening internaly in the transmission when it "thunks." Has anyone had their car fix. I mean had the dealer fix what is described in the TSB?
