Cruise Acceleration

Is it just my Max, or does everyone else experience jerky/hard to control acceleration when you accelerate using the cruise "accel" feature while cruising at highway speeds? I always find myself having to fight the downshift that it wants to do. Almost like it wants to "accel" too quickly rather than a gradual increase. I've had to train myself to use the pedal to get up to the speed I want and then hit "set" again.

Guess we can live with too much acceration if we HAVE to

I know what you're talking about and I seem to notice that happening on most of the cars I've driven. When you hit the accelerate button its almost like putting your foot down on the gas pedal. I dont think its necessarily a problem, but I do wish it was a little smoother.

Nah, mine "accels" smoothly, but I do sometimes get a little on-off hoochi-koochi dance when it's going down a hill. It's like it keeps chopping the throttle and then having to give it a little more gas to hold the speed. (Yes, I realize that's what it's doing, but my other cars have always done it invisibly so you don't feel it.) It's not a big deal, since it happens only once in a while.

Sounds like yours is trying to accelerate too aggressively with the "accel" button. CoolMax would probably tell you it's because it's front-wheel drive.

Yeah, my 6sp is nice and smooth too. I find I use the cruise buttons to adjust my speed up and down as needed while crusing on the high way.

Could be mostly related to the auto since cruise would then also be shifting...

Anyway, I've found that I get better MPG while just holding the car's speed current rather than using the cruise function because I can anticipate the car's needed speed corrections going over hills, etc, whereas the cruise cannot. Also, for some strange reason I think I get my best MPG at 70+..

Cruise control gives trouble in a lot of cars unless the ground is fairly level. The hillier the terrain, or the longer the grade, the worse CC tends to perform.

I remember having a bad case of herky jerky with the cruise control in my '85 Maxima unless I touched it very very briefly, let the car move up to the new speed, then touched it again, etc.

Based on my experience with cruise control in several vehicles, I honestly believe the 'accelerate' function of this system is intended only for slight adjustments of one MPH or so. Any increases greater than that are more efficiently done via the accelerator pedal, then push 'set' when you are at the speed you want.

At least, that has been my experience.

my auto cruise accelerated smoothly even up to 85 mph. I think its just all the power, but no jerk from mine.

I think the cruise control in this car is terrible. Besides not holding speed, my car accelerated SO SLOWLY that I thought it was NEVER goign to make it!!!

Guess I'll have 'em check this out. Looks like I'm in the minority on this one. I cruise on level roads mostly. It seems that when I'm at 60-70 and want to bump up a few MPH, it will invariably want to downshift as soon as I get my finger on the accel button. Must be an adjustment of some sort.....
