I work for all the dealerships here in Charleston and install all the mobile electronics...well actually I have guys who do it for me now....when it comes to remote starts, DEI (they make viper, automate, hornet wasp,etc.....) make the best products. Most installers will agree with me. Find a reputable shop (ie Bestbuy, Circuit City....) and have them install one for you.....it's really not to hard to install just as long as you know what you're doing. DO NOT GO TO NISSAN TO GET THIS DONE BY SOME TECHNICIAN WHO DOESN'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT REMOTE STARTS.

I agree. I would avoid the dealership unless needed. I used to work at Circuit City for about 7 years doing stereos and alarms. I have had my 1996 4Runner with a Viper 550 on it for 8 years. The truck has only failed to start 1 time since I installed it. I plan on getting a new DEI product when I pick up my new Maxima in March or so. The whole line has changed so much over the years I can't speak for anything but the brand. You won't be disappointed with a DEI product.

install30 has the best advice, get it installed correctly, you don't want any problems down the road. I've had mine for over a year with no problems...
By the way I have the Clifford Matrix 3.5RS
Here's a thread with a bit more info:

Good luck!!

Thanks...just make sure whoever does the remote start knows for sure what he/she is doing. MECP certification doesn't really make a difference....true hands on training and good experience should be a good start.

I found a place on Broadway in my neighborhood that had a Valet 561T (DEI) for $180 installed with the bypass module and the anti-grind module.. They said they could program my factory key fob to do the starting and not lose any of the functionality of the Nissan fob. I wanted to continue to be able to do the windows down and the trunk pop with the fob. When you go with the aftermarket brands and use their fobs, you have to add modules for most of the additional functions. I figured keeping the Nissan fob was the best way to go.

So, I picked up my Max and drove off to pick up a few things at Osco. I came out of the store and hit the remote start. The car started fine and then I tried to pop the trunk. Nothing. Ditto for the windows down function. I turned the car off and tried to pop the trunk, and it worked like usual. WTF? Back to the shop and they told me this was a safety feature. The tech demonstrated that even when started normally with the key, if you tried to pop the trunk with the fob (while the car is running), it won’t work. They told me I have 3 options: open the trunk with the fob, and then activate the remote start (not always safe), remote start the car, shut it down, pop the trunk, remote start again (too low-tech for me), or remote start, open the door, pop the trunk from inside, and then go back around to the trunk (too much movement). They’re going to check to see if there’s a module available to bypass the “safety” function.

Well, I would suggest asking them to upgrade you to the 562T. It is a remote start system with keyless entry. It has an aftermarket key fob but, you can get all of the features that the factory one has. The window roll up and trunk pop are very simple add-ons. All the installer has to do is hook up the wires, there is no need for an extra modules. While the installer is there though, I would have him hook up the window roll down feature on the DEI remote. So, you would actually have more features with the DEI remote than the factory one. PLUS, you get better range with aftermarket remotes. GOOD LUCK.

Then again, maybe I haven't made myself clear. Ok. Here's the drill: start your car normally with the key. Press the trunk button on the fob. It won't work. This is the safety feature--designed so that we don't accidently pop the trunk while in motion. Now, shut the car off. Start it with the remote starter. Try to pop the trunk with the fob. Same safety feature comes into play. Frankly, I can't see myself accidently pushing the trunk or any other button on the fob while in motion. Nissan: protect us from ourselves?

Yeah, I figured that's what you meant. With the DEI remotes you can still use your trunk pop and other features while the car is started. I figured that is what your after.

However...the DEI remotes won't do the window down function. So, after living with the RS for 2 frigid days in Chitown, I think I'll adjust to having to pop the trunk b4 I do the remote start. Now if only I can get the fob to swing open my side garage door...

yes, the DEI remote will do the window down function. You can also add the window up to the DEI remote. If you have the door locks hooked up then, all your installer has to do is extend the pulse on the door lock wires to control your windows.

But anyway, if you are happy with what you got then that's cool.

LOL, on the garage door. I won't even get started with that.

Make sure that you have your tach connection hooked up. You shouldn't have a problem if it's hooked up right.

yes... tach wire

How to find a tachometer wire with your multimeter:

1. Set to ACV or AC voltage (12V or 20V is fine).

2. Attach the (-) probe of the meter to chassis ground.

3. Start and run the vehicle.

4. Probe the wire you suspect of being the tachometer wire with the red probe of the meter.

5. If this is the correct wire the meter will read between 1V and 6V.

(It should increase and decrease with the vehicles rpm)

just some info...
