I have about 400 miles on my 05 SL and there is a noise from the front end of the car that I hear most noticeably around 40 to 55 mph. The sound is something like the sound you make when you blow into a large bottle (low pitched whisting or humming noise). The noise doesn't appear to change in pitch with speed changes. It's volume does increase over rougher road surfaces. Service department hasn't been able to determine the source yet. It seems that when they test drive the vehicle the noise is not always present. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Check for loose trim pieces in the engine bay. The trim piece over top of the grill wasn't fastened securely on mine and it howled when I got over 50mph. I just needed two new fasteners for it.

I'll give that a try. The trim piece is just a little loose. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the source. If so, I'll owe you. This is driving me nuts. I'm almost ready to turn the car back in. The noise I am experiencing even continues at lower speeds as I'm coming to a stop.

Hmmm thats probably not the trim piece then.

Could be the hollow bottle sound of the the new tires that i've heard people mention before. Bring it in and have it checked out. Thid might help:
