Smoke and coral sand were added to the '04 color selection as of February 6th, 2004. That means there were five months of '04s built where smoke was available. Smoke was made available on all option combinations of both the '04 SE and SL.
I have promised NismoMax80 a stickey that will show this, but have had many things come up. Maybe soon . . .

Yeah, in 05 they got rid of radient ember and added smoke. I think in 06 they should bring back the red that they painted some 4th gens.

Actually, the radiant ember was an introductory color that was discontinued almost two years ago. It was only used from January 2003 (when Nissan first began assembling the 6th gen Maxima) until July, 2003. Any radiant embers bought after summer of 2003 were 'leftovers'.
And NO colors were added for the 2005 Maxima. Both smoke and coral sand have been available since February 6th, 2004.
The ONLY color change for the 2005 was the dropping of champagne mist. Nissan evidently decided it was too close in hue to coral sand. I feel popularity also entered into the equation; the champagne mists that arrived at dealers in the Atlanta area tended to be slow sellers.
I feel certain that, since no colors were added for 2005, there should definitely be one or two added for 2006. I would not be surprised by some shade of dusty green (sage).
It has also been my hope that a unique color for a special version of the 2006 Maxima, clearly marked as a 25th anniversary edition, might be available. If Nissan cannot settle on another special color, a return to burnt ember should work nicely. But who knows?
