i need a new transmission...

so basically, i ruined the 5spd and it's not covered under waranty anymore because i've went outside my mileage boundary. lol

two things..

can i rebuild parts of the transmission with new?? would that be sensible and or cheaper than a new transmission?

im also wondering if it's possible to switch to a 6spd. and where i should start looking besides calling a gang of wrecking yards for such parts.
or even a new 5spd auto would be great!

im basically desperate, and need to find a new tranny soon.
any help is good help

What happened to the tranny? Also how many miles are on the car? The powertrain warranty is good for 60,000 miles. Sorry to hear that your tranny went out. I guess you could call around to some junkyards. You could also check this site. A few weeks ago a member totaled his car. I wish I knew who it was. He might be able to tell you where his car is. That is really scary that your tranny went that quick. I hope some of the guys in here can point you in the right direction. Look under the threads in here and look for the thread about the totaled max. He had pictures and everything on it. Good luck.

Mate be the first think outside the box ....

Drop is the CVT 6 speed auto out of a wrecked Murano, it should drop straight in as they do with Nissan Teana ... Even the ratios are good ...

I would possibly commit crime to be able to get my hands on one of them trannies....

Go For it.. :attention

6spd manual transmission swap will be a headache. i bet manual transmission swap will cost you at least double of what simple transmission replacement cost.

Unless your mileage is over 60,000 miles (I doubt it -- but possible) or the car is over 6 years old (not yet), you should go to your dealer and get it handled under the powertrain warranty.

My thoughts exactly. I would hope you didnt go over warranty mileage that quick. Or did you do something that voided the warr. I know the problems with dealing with them I just can't see buying a new or rebuilt tranny this early in the cars life. If you have to replace it noe you have a along road of you.

unfortunately guys... i voided warrantee with too many miles, and i replaced the fluid with a different brand.

also, it has some track miles on it... the transmission isnt completely burnt out but i feel all sorts of problems with it.

i didn't really know about the matic k fluid so i ended up replacing with others.
pretty much ruined it now... might be in for a rebuild?

Many years ago my wife's F**d needed xmission work. It was long past warranty and we went to AAMCO. They dropped it, dissassembled it, priced out the parts it would need and installed a rebuilt unit quickly and reasonably priced. I don't know what their current service is like but it has to be cheaper than a dealer and more reliable than a junkyard if you can't get the warranty coverage.

It might be worthwhile to call 1.800.nissan before doing anything else and talk nicely to the Customer Service people. I did on more than one occasion and was refunded $$ for service work performed at the dealer who only `went by the book' for mileage.

I just saw an '04 5sp manual (????) on eBay. click here . I have no connection/relationaship w/seller and am posting this as a service.

I'm at 48k and I have a feeling that I will need one too. Maybe I should schedule a tranny fluid change and mention that it feels...jittery.

The CVT would probably add about 5 mpg. I dunno how the max compares to the murano weight wise. But if the max weighs less I would bet good money that the maxima would get great mileage. The new ford 500 has a CVT. I think it's b/c it's awd. The murano is AWD too. The Murano CVT probably won't work b/c of the AWD. but CVT is a cool technology that still needs tweaking.

I love to drive my Max. I love driving in general. I feel that many people don't appreciate the priviledge of driving.

Enjoy your cars...drive them. After all, thats what they are made for.

In my last car with an auto Trannie (my Max has a 6-speed manual), the problem showed
up when I was cruising the interstate in Missouri and looked at the tach. It said over 2,500
RPM and I knew at that speed the RPMs should be about 2,000. The trannie was slipping
in top gear, so I drove to the nearest dealer and waited 3 days for it to be fixed (just barely
under warranty). That experience (the hassel with the warranty) caused me to no longer
consider GM cars and to only get a car with a manual transmission. Thus the Max.

So Bro,what are you going to do? Sounds like a good project. Post it and keep us updated. Sad to hear all these tranny problems on such new vehicles. Hope this ain't going to be a common problem on the 6th gen!

Go to Fluids and Lubes section and read the stickie on auto trannies. Or read your owners manual.

With my last 3 cars, I started the first oil change @30Kmiles (drain and refill). Then every 15Kmiles afterward to screen out the left-over. My '97Max 4spd is running strong @150K, I can't even tell if it was better when new. My '99Pathfinder is kinda jumpy between 1st&2nd (still less severe that my '04Max cold shift-shock) but it's approaching 100K with zero problem. My '93Accord..well, it's another story (I think you should change oil twice as often with Honda's cars). Its trans finally gave out at 165K. But from 40K on, it has been crappy. It jerks with every gear shifts (the engine actually dips when you shift gears). I'm surprise it lasts so long (must be because of all my yearly oil changes).
About my '04Max, I'm looking forward to changing the oil the 1st time @30K... if I can find the damn plug.

So heres the deal:

Took my car to Nissan Dealer to get the transmission checked and fluid changed. Rob, the service manager stated that the fluid was dark and recommended the full service for $169.00. So I say ok, I'll go with it.
I call back to check the status of my vehicle and Rob says, "We serviced the transmission and had to flush 2 times because we have the old machine with the ATF."

I know that K-Matic is the new stuff so that immediately rang the bell in my head.

I told him that the manual specifically states to use K-Matic fluid only. I havent heard of flushing it 2 times. Rob reassured me that everything is fine and I wont have any problems.

I guess the bottom line is that a Nissan Dealer performed the service and used whatever fluid that was in the machine. So they are responsible, correct?

I would definately think so, there is no way that they could even attempt to blame you if a transmission failure occured due to their error!!

Just make sure that the error is documented.
