LED DRL's installed

Since I made a thread about this a couple weeks ago, some people wanted to know the results of installed 1156 LED's instead of the stock bulbs that burn out in no time (6 k for me) for the daytime running lights.

Anyways, found some 12 LED whites at the local Canadian Tire.

Since the LED's are forward facing, they don't fill the housing with light, but it's way less yellow and should last much longer.

Here are the pics (sorry about the camera phone quality).

Stock bulb:

At night, I would be using the actual headlights.
I'll see if I can get night pics though.

Those pics are pretty much exactly what they look like. It's been a fairly overcast day.

The second pic is how they look, that isn't a reflection you're seeing. I probably just took the pic in the light beam, itself. Move up or down a bit and it looks like 12 glowing lights.

Here are some twilight pics:

They pretty much look like HID's, except they don't put out much light.

That looks hot. Only downside is i think people would confuse them for high beams even more then they do now. Otherwise i think it looks great.

I like the look. I wish it were easy to have DRLs here in the states.

Looks sweet.
Yeah I looked at the US version and you can see the outline where the plug would go but it's a solid piece. I actually drilled through it to see what was behind and there's what looked like some kind of plate or something, I just gave up at that point...
And for you bulbs you might try the ones I uses on my tails/front blinkers, they will fill the lens with light...

If lined up directly (as in an oncoming car), yes, but not by much. DRL's aren't very bright to begin with. 1156 bulbs are usually used for back up lights or turn signals. The minute twilight hits, the headlights go on.

I'm sure you could add them... just have to drill out the housings, run some wiring... should not be that hard of a modification

or just buy the headlights off of a canadian model.... and run wires no drilling needed = no bulb fitment testing = no cracked lens = no complete waste of money you would have to hook them up to any ignition wire with 12volts uninterupted

EDIT: Is it easy to get at the daytime running lights from the back??

To get to the DRL's is pretty easy. You need a 10 mm socket and that's about it. Twist the washer filler shaft counter clockwise and pull it out, then undo the coolant reservoit (2 10 mm bolts and move it).

On the drivers side, pop off the top of the airbox, remove the lower half and that's all you need.

I bought the Ractive 1156 lights (in the locked section with all the junky accessories). They have blue, red and white in the 1156 size.

FYI, I took the bulbs out. Within two weeks one was flickering. At the end of week 2 (ie. today), one was toast and the other was flickering.

I'm assuming the Ractive LED's are pure garbage. Just a heads up to make sure you buy a quality LED.

sidenote: on my third set of DRL's and nissan has finally doen a good job.. this set has lasted me over a year (the potholes are just the same) - another indication (in canada) if u have an 04/05 --- one or both of the DRL's are off! (unless u have had faith in nissan, like me, and changed them several times)

I put in some GE long lifers. Hopefully that works good. I might try LED's again, but they are pricey and it's not really worth it if they don't last more than a couple weeks.

I am wondering if they were shorted out because of the power to the leds.... unless there is some sort of resistor built in I think 12volts would short them..... leds typically can take 3-5volts.... 12 is alot and will deffinitly shorten life span....
