How many miles is a 6th Gen good for
#3
I think modern engines should last ~200-300Kmiles. The next important thing is the transmission, then the AC/heater, then on and on. I gave my '97 (~100K) to my nephew in 2004. He commutes between CA & Arkansas and almost to the 200K mark. The only problems was an alternator ($149 installed) and a loose heatshield ($45 labor). That baby is mostly tight and strong. Never needs an alignment. The trans is still amazingly tight. My '93 Accord craps totally @165K. My friend's '89 Camry (120K) feels like a 101yr old man (OK it's a lot older but check the mileage). And the Max's leather and paint are still nice. My Accord's paint is like an old jean (I think I pamperred it more than I did to the Max, since it was my 1st family car). So I don't doubt my 04 will go pass the 200K mark if I want to keep it (doubt that). But I wouldn't be surprised if some minor things fail along the way. If my boss can spend $45K after hitting the curve @10MPH with his S500, I shouldn't bother with the $200 I spent on my old Max.

Too many factors to give this a solid answer.
I am guess you are asking this because you are intending on purchasing the vehicle and you want to make sure you get your money's worth. Car should be good for at least 7 years, just as a shot in the dark...

I kept one of my two '85 Maximas for 15 years, and had 206,000 on the odo when I let her go for $3,200. She still looked great (not a scratch) when I let her go. Seeing her disappear in the distance almost broke my heart. Of course, I was anally protective of her; of the dozens of cars I have owned in my 57 years of driving, she had to be my all-time favorite.
Although I will probably trade my perfect '04 SL in at some point, I would not be the least surprised if she lasted over 200,000 miles.
I am withholding my opinion on the '07 Maximas until I see how the CVTs do long-term. If the CVTs give no trouble, I don't see why an '07, with decent care and service, would not last over 200,000 miles.
To put it another way, during the 1970s and 1980s, American manufacturers actually designed vehicles with the intent that they last around 80,000 to 100,000 miles. On average, the Maxima should easily double those numbers.

Thanks for the intelligent replies
My question was not how long will a 6th Gen Last, I meant for those spending their hard earn money on the car, how many trouble free miles could you expect to get out of the car before it was not worth it to keep it, paying the car off I'd like to get a 150k out of it with of course just routine maintenance but things could happen, I'm more concerned with anything electronic/computer controlled after the 100k mark.
I'd like a few years without a car payment so I can pay for a house

I think there are too many factors to get a good read on how long a car will last. I always look for the older models of my car and see if there are a lot of them around. I still see a bunch of 3rd and 4th genner's around. Sometimes I see the 85-88's. I see a lot of them still looking real good and pthers are hanging on for dear life. I had a mazda 929 (92) model. When I first got that car I saw them everywhere now they seem almost extinct.

This question just has too many variables, it's right up there with how long people will live...

I just hit 125K. Only minor stuff up to this point. Did my shocks at 90K thanks to a huge pothole. This spring I started hearing A/C noise and now will need to do the Compressor. So far not bad. I expect about 200K is good before repairs outway the benefits.

Tranny and precats less than 85k on my car, (and others) big ticket items both of them. I expect about 200k but by then I may be going the Deus route and trying some autocross with it so I do expect to keep it for a while. I'd actually like to keep mine for years until it becomes a collector car. Like people look back and wanted the 68 Camaro etc.

My 93 accord is still running with 240k miles.
My 98 maxima has 120k miles and runs fine as well.

Im just curious , how did you manage to dig a 2 year old thread up ?
Did you search for 6th gen maxima and this thread came up or someting ?

When I originally started this thread I just got the car, now I'm at 63k I guess I was more or less wondering if I would have any unexplained break downs, but the car has been problem free and very well maintained, I can now say, having owned the car for almost 4 years this September, that I expect to hit 120-150k before anything major and costly becomes a concern

When you do a search looking for specific things, a lot of random things pop up as well

yeah but why do we bump 2-3 year old threads ?

100,000 miles after that its hit, & miss. Sell the car when it hits that mileage. Don't take a chance. 1 thing will lead to another, and before you know it you will be like wow wish I had sold it at 100,000 miles.
I drive about 4,000 miles a year, so I'll worry about that in 16 years.
Probably won't be keeping the car that long, so I will never reach that mileage. I won't worry about it.
