I got my shimmy fixed!

This is a x-post from the shimmy thread, but I figured I'd post here so more people would see it.

I bought my car at 21k miles, and had somewhat serious shimmy that was pressure dependent. When the shimmy was on, the front right floor board would shake violently, to the point it was embrassing to have people in my car. My right front RSA had a bad crack on the side wall, and the treads were worn to the wear bar, so I bought new tires today.

So I went out and bought a pair of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires from a speciality tire shop. I mentioned the shimmy issue and the shop balanced my tires carefully. I told them to use the 5 bolt lugs to mount the tires. After I got it back, the car is perfectly smooth and quiet, and finally is driving like a car in this price range is supposed to!

So to all with the shimmy, I recommend going to a tire speciality shop with a Hunter GPS9700 and pay for a balance. Don't go to the dealer since they don't specialize in anything really. Even if this does not work, it should significantly improve the situation.

Good luck

Ming

I have been saying for awhile that the issue was with the tires. i had my RSA balanced and found out that one of tires was bad. Warranty got me a new one and I have had no problems since.

I had the RSA's on when i first bought my 04 last year, the dealer put on four new ContiTouring Contact CH95. I'm sure these were the absolute cheapest tires they could find to replace the RSA's, but my shimmy still exists. Unfortunately I can't run out and throw some high dollar tires on the car to try another brand, but very cool you got your shimmy fixed! Much less frustration now, i'm sure

When i bought my '04 in Nov 2004, it came with the Eagle RSAs. The ride was smooth from 0 mph to 140 mph. Superb handling even in the rain. I never ever had a shimmy problem. Even rode the tires about 9,000 miles before going to Goodyear to have the sidewalls checked; found out 3 tires had numerous sidewall cracks. The ID no.s on the bad tires matched the previously posted list. Now, at 36,000 miles had the right strut replaced due to leaking. Still never had shimmy. The shimmy has got to come from improper wheel balancing!

Had several attempts to fix the shimmy; new rotors, struts, road force balance, blah, blah, blah. Nothing worked. The service manager drove a brand new 05 SL off the lot and it didn't shimmy. He took took those four wheels and put them on my 04 SL and POOF, Shimmy is all gone. Hasn't been back for over 10,000 miles.

I got my shimmy fixed, too.

They replaced the brakes, rotors & pads, and rebalanced tires. Thank god. Braking at 30 MPH + was HELL!
