What do you recommend?

I'm starting to hydroplane really bad nowadays and I'm planning on changing my OEM tires. I have '04 SL with Conti tires with 48,000++ miles in it. I'm looking at buying Goodyear Assurance Tripletred. Any other recommendations? Thanks!

Stay away from Goodyear, many comparable tires at lower prices

Look into:

BF Goodrich g-force KDW-II
Nitto 555
Kumho
Falken
Dunlop

I have these.....

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....odel=AVS+ES100

....one of the best purchases I have made for the car. On rainy days I just glide through puddles. These tires are very good, and amazing with the handling. Only little downside is that the road noise it's a bit loud, but if you're like me and keep your music high you won't notice that.

Snow is one of my considerations, although it doesnt always snow here where im at, but there were days that it snowed for 2 - 4 inches, and I use my Max for daily driving. Chernmax, you cautioned me from buying goodyear tires. May I ask why? Thanks guys!

The man has been running on the stock Conti for 48Kmiles and he doesn't complain much. And there are some recommendations for high-performance, short-life treadware, summer tires ? I think some good touring tires may suit you better. And save you $$$ in the long run. Just MO. Trust me. I'm on the third sets with only 39+Kmiles on my SE. The noise from the high-performance tires just kill me. I'm currently on a set of Yoko S4. It's the best driving since I bought the car. Very balanced between performance and comfort (noise that is)

I dont care what anyone says, the Goodyear Assurance Tripletred tires are one of the best tires on the market for all season. They were even rated #1 in consumer reports. I am not a big fan of most goodyear tires, but I would definately go with the tripletreads.

i had toyo proxes 4 wrapped on my axis mod and they performed very well in the rain. what can a guy from sunny state california know about rain? well, we had some nasty storms few years ago in southern california and i've drove through some huge puddles without any problems. only bad thing about those tires is road noise.

You'll lose a lot of ride comfort, plus the speedo and odo will be really off. If finding tires OEM size that you want is difficult, consider 235-45's. That's a more common size. Not the same height, but would be better than 225's.

If you haven't installed them yet, might want to try a refund. I installed those tires on an 01 I30. 30K miles later, they started to wear very unevenly. THought it was an alignment, or balancing issue. Turns out the tires were bad. High spots all over the tires. Better yet, they don't come with a warrenty because they are a sport tire ... Hence the name. I would recommend a different tire. They did look good when they were clean though.

Thanks for the info. The SP Sport A2 Plus do come with a 55,000mi treadwear warranty and plus I bought mine from Discount Tire Direct with the Certificate of Free Replacements. If I ever have a problem, I'll just have it replaced for free. I already had a Michelin tire replaced on my Honda with ease from Discount Tire.

Hey shadowfox777, let us know how those Dunlops work out.

I'll let you know how they go. I plan on installing them in November. Currently I have 28,000mi on my oem Continentals and they're right a the wear bars. The reviews on TireRack are great. I beleive the SP Sport A2 Plus is in 5 place in the high performace all season category. The only other tire I could get in that category that my size was the Yoko Avid H4s (cost more too).

You could go with a 245/50/17 to keep the speedo reading the same. Technically its off by 0.1% but thats negligable. 245/50/17 is a very odd size; there aren't a lot of tire companies that make that size and if they do, its expensive.

Hey MaxFan

How many miles do you have on your Yoko Advan S4's?
I'm considering these or the Bridgestone Potenza 960 AS
and leaning towards the Yokos because of price, noise and the great reviews.
I'm looking at performance but also some peace and quiet compared to the RSA's
Thx

I have piled up about 800miles on the Yoko S4s. I like them very much so far. I can't tell much down the road if the noise might come with age. But right now it's a joy. It put the luxo feeling to the Max when crusing around. My Max has a mind of its own in some situations, maybe tires tracking the road or VDC interference. But I don't see that any longer, so it's the tires. It's big improment over the RSA and AvonTech. The yokos take bumps better. I haven't even chirp the tires yet (yes, I spinned the other tires once awhile). It looks mighty good. My braking is much better. I can't tell about braking distance, but the feeling is solid. Just rolling to a stop sign can tell how nicer braking becomes. And did I say it's quiet !!!

I'd like to add some improvements due to the Yoko S4s. They came from Japan, so QA is top-notch. I counted about 4 QA approval stamps on the tires. And then markings possibly are high/low points. It helps greatly with balancing. One of my wheels has no added weight. I got no shimmys out the door. About flat spots in the morning, I had had vibrations on 1st runs in the morning or even during the day after long layoff. With the Yokos, it's very light and disappears quickly after a few minutes. I only feel that if accelerate quickly, otherwise no hint of it.

Ok, cool. I bought mine from Tire Plus. They were cheap, and didn't offer the warrenty. Discount Tire had them?? That suprised me, and wish I had knew that. Good luck.

Car and Driver tested some tires last December. Here is the PDF link:

I still like to read the comparisons and feedback on tirerack.com.

thanks for the link. very informative. But although it rarely snows here where I live, I still don't want to be changing tires when it does snow. So I guess Im going for an "All-Season" tire then. Thannks!

I have about 2k on the michelin pilot sport a/s tires and they are awesome. Theres a little road noise but not more than should be expected. They did exceptional in rain and dry pavement. They never squeeled or broke on long hard turns. It hasn't snowed in NM yet but we're expecting a snowy winter so I guess I'll see. If you have the OEM Goodyears I'd get rid of those ASAP as they are known to crack on the inner sidewalls as mine did.

BFGoodrich G-Force KDW, the one with wicked tread (i think they call it new tread) sticky as hell. Got it at COSTCO so their warranty will cover holes and sh-it like that.
