Paint Thinner and Grill.

I decided to put my E&G Classic Grille back to stock (I had painted the interior black) because it makes the grille look smaller.

However, when I brought it inside and tried to use paint thinner, nothing would come off???

I used Krylon Fusion paint and Acrylic Clear Coat to cover it. I should probably soak it, but how do you soak a grille?

Any ideas why this wouldn't take off the paint?

Guys. Head to activetuning.com and get yourselves a real grill. You'll thank me later.

Soak it in tub of some kind. Rubbermaid makes under the bed tubs... Target FTW.

Either that or take it to a powdercoater. They should be albe to blast it off without damage.

My grille was quite expensive and has a very high quality - not an ebay ripoff...I'm not familiar with activetuning - however, perhaps you should get yourself a real grille?

Paint thinner does not take off paint. It does exactly as it says, thins paint. You can use paint thinner to remove paint when it is still wet, but once it dries you can kiss the paint thinner good bye. To remove paint once it is dry, you have to use paint stripper. Yes it strips the paint off. The only thing is you can not use it on plastic because it messes up (warps) the plastic. Your best bet would be to take it to a powercoater and have them sandblast it and then paint it again. Or you can sand it with the finest grit paper you can find. Steel wool is even finer.

I would say no-no on the steelwool...

Call a stripping co. and get their opinion.

Offically you will never get it back to stock because once you take off the "new paint" that you put on there to change the apperance, it is also going to take off the finish that nissan had on there.

Therefore, you are going to have to end up painting it again. If you want to sand it down so that you can put a different color on you can use steel wool with a grit of like 3000. You can also get 3000 Grit sand paper and wet sand it. Trust me, you will NEVER EVER get paint that has already dried off with paint thinner. I had a spray gun that i was using and i forgot to wash out the tiny spray tip. I let that thing sit in a bath of paint thinner for like 3 days and it still would not unclog.

Guys, if I'm not mistaken he's referring to his E&G classics grill, which again if I'm not mistaken is all metal. In that case, Steel Wool would work great on it. I've used it on metal lots and it works like a charm with a little elbow grease.

If in fact it is an all metal grill, then get that thing sandblasted at your local powdercoater. That is probably the best results you are going to get. If you don't want to go that root and it is 100% metal, go get yourself some paint stripper and some steel wool. Remeber you can not get any paint stripper on plastic.

Although, you did say that you used Krylon Fusion paint which would suggest that it is plastic; in which case, good luck sanding with the finest grit possible. If you use too course of a grit you will get scratches in the plastic that you will never be able to get rid of.

Any Pics???

Easy Off oven cleaner will remover paint and wont hurt the plastic. Its something I learned from building model cars when I was growing up. I used it several times when changing colors on my interior trim pieces on my 4th gen's. Just spray and let it soak on for a while then use an old toothbrush and scrub the old paint off.

You could try lacquer thinner, acetone or xylene....paint thinner isn't made to remove paint, esp lacquer...IIRC, lacquer thinner may be a little too strong for the plastic, not sure but one of the others should work...Never heard of oven cleaner working but it's always nice to know of alternative (and sometimes cheaper) solutions...

reading comprehension is in this thread.

Metal grille.
(not stock plastic)
wants to remove paint.
Paint thinner does not remove dried paint.

Options:
sand it off or
paint stripper or
have a powder coater do it
polish

Thank you.

It is, in fact, a metal grille. That is a grille made of metal, not plastic.

I will look at stripper as well as sanding it.

Thank you.

I used the over cleaner on some aluminum once, and it pitted it pretty badly.

I just wanted to let you all know.

I bought, for 5.95 at Advanced Auto Parts "Paint Remover". It took the paint right off, very quickly.

I'll post pics.
