So I'm nearing 60K...
and the SES light comes on for the first time since I got the car. It's not a maintenance reminder is it? The car feels and drives fine. A buddy of mine said it could be the O2 sensor(s).
So does our O2 sensor go bad around 60k? Anyone else's SES come on near/at 60k?

Why don't you go to Autozone and let them pull the code for free?

yeah i'll get the codes pulled tomorrow and see whats the deal.
would that still apply even though i have an aftermarket cat-back?

I am not sure why it was giving me the cat converter code for this but it did. You should definitely pull the code, and if you can check for a broken exhaust bracket. They have a service bulletin on this because it happens all the time, and there are a few parts they have to change if you take it in, so if this ends up being what is wrong and you can do it yourself, I would. The SES light hasn't been back since.
One more thing. I talked to the Service manager at the dealership, and this sounds like crap to me, but he said for the car to qualify for the 80k exhaust warranty for the cat converter, the P0420 light has to be on.

had the code pulled today, turns out it was my gas cap that was loose...which is kinda wierd considering i always tighten it until it clicks. resetted the code and no SES lights so far.

If you plan on keeping your maxima for a long time you better get an extended warrenty on your car because 2500 dollars now will save you alot if you have anything happen. I mean the cost of a transmission alone is 4000 so if you have to replace it then you allready made it worth your investment. don't be foolish and wait till your maxima ****s the bed. 200 miles left on drivetrain would get me into a dealer. the ses light does not mean there is an o2 problem. Take it to the dealer and have them fix it. If they say your exhaust is why they won't cover it then they have to prove it caused the problem. you can go to autozone have them run the codes but they give you a general idea which doesn't garentee the problem. If the dealer says your exhaust is the cause, and you think the cost is worth saving, take and put the orriginal part back on and then take it to another dealer to have fixed. shady but works.

The SES light came on with my car when it hit 60k as well. The light went off the next day and never came back on. I had already planned to take my car in for the 60k maintenance and when I did, the Service Manager saw how many miles I had on the car. Out of the blue he asked if my SES light came on in a way that it seemed like he expected it, and that it should have come on when it hit 60k. Maybe our cars are programmed to throw the light when it reaches 60k?
