interesting waranty claim at dealership
Bought an 06 MT last year with 85,000 kilometres (53,000 miles). Noticed this spring it was starting to consume oil at the rate of about 1 litre @ 1400 kilometres (900 miles). I took it to the nearest dealership with 99,250 kilometres on the car for a waranty claim for excessive oil consumption. They put a small camera down to find out the 2nd and 3rd cylinders where scored. They did an oil consumption test over the next 750 kilometres where the engine used 1.5 litres of oil. Today they told me they checked the catalytic con. which are all fine and Nissan has agreed to replace the engine.
Now heres the interesting part, they did not ask for service records (which I could not furnish) but agreed to replace the engine. This would lead me to believe that Nissan is well aware of this issue with the 3.5's and I would bet my last dollar there is a service bulliten regarding this issue.
A few questions: 1. Am I to assume that Nissan has remedied the problem and that the replacement engine will not meet the same fate as the original engine? 2. What caused the scoring of the engine?, and 3. what break-in procedures should I follow?
An interesting sidenote, here in Canada the power train waranty is 100,000 kilomtres, which is 62,100 miles. I have noticed others on this forum who have had issues just over 60,000 miles. In Canada they would be covered.

they covered it because you were within warranty.
or did i miss something?
2,100 isn't really that long for something like that to just pop up.
I have heard of some, but do not think it is a very common issue.
I personally changed the factory oil after 1000ish miles. up to you.
Drive it easy and dont let it rest at a constant RPM for too far. Just don't use cruise control for awhile maybe 1-5k? i dont remember.
Use regular 5w30 motor oil for 10k miles and do regular intervals(3750 here). If you like Synthetic, change it after 10k. I did 20k since I had a stockpile of rebated oil. sorry but you're probably used to converting anyway.

when i had my transmission done in july of last year i asked the service rep if nissan had fixed the issue with their crappy transmissions from the early 6th gens and his like nope we just popped in a brand new crappy one that is his exact words to me......so i would bet on it that your new engine will burn oil just as much lol eventhough i dont currently have a oil burning issue (knock on wood)

I too had an oil burning issue, I just switched my oil to a higher weight. I am currently running 15w 50 here in Hawaii. I drive hard and it's 80-90 during winter here and 90+ during summer, if that helps. If you are in the same type of weather, I suggest using the same weight oil and see if that helps. Also reduces the knocking sound. I opened the oil cap while the car was running the other day to see how things where looking in there, and noticed the cam was moving fine, however it looked warped. Also noticed that the oil was not covering the lifters and springs that well. I am looking into getting a better oil pump.
