Roof strips nightmare

Hey, I decided to do something about my roof strips.

Honestly, I think a good option is to just sand them a bit to make them sticky, then paint with krylon fusion gloss black.

My issue is that I had the brilliant idea to get them to bare plastic before starting. Sanding them made uneven spots. Now that it's all nice and gloss black, it's like a mine field

I guess I'll just scrape most of the paint off, and get some bondo, make sure it's all smooth and flat, hand sand to make it smooth, and then re-paint.... I'll keep you informed

bad idea. the second you go to put them back on the strips will flex, bondo will crack, and you will ruin everything you did.

Go with Bluebat overlays. They will solve the problem and they last a long time. I still have mine after several years.

Leave them as they are and plasti-dip them.

No need to prep to use it.

my problem is that I already prepped them too much. Should have just left them like that.....

Got some stuff at canadian tire made by bondo. Finishing putty, says that it glues to plastic. I opened the tube but it was hardened inside... gotta get another one.

I dont really have a choice to fix them, because I ruined them, kinda, so I cannot back.

I'll post pics once it's done I guess.

used some bumper fix black epoxy to fix the holes.... painted. Doesnt look #1, but still looks OK. If it's too bad I'll get some matte black. It's gloss now.

ill take pics tomorrow when I install them I guess.

I wanted the gloss look cause all other black moulding is gloss...

I think it would look nice just painting them with krylon fusion black, no prep...

Sanding ruined mine actually. Couldnt go back, had to fix w some epoxy and re-sand by hand... Now I cant get them smooth and nice.... It looks "ok".

I got 10% off the factory price so I bought a new pair this year....$300 for a pair seems steep but that's the price of perfection. Now I'm going to put a coat of protective wax to seal them and protect it from cracking and fading. Soft buffing with a microfiber cloth and liquid wax sealer.

My advice would be to sand all of the krylon fusion off. Use some primer and primer filler. Then just use a different brand of paint. I suggest Duplicolor.

Krylon Fusion only requires that you clean off the area that's to be painted and your good to go. So, since you already sanded the crap out of it. I wouldn't recommend that you go back to that. You could but you would be using it outside of its recommended application method.

Sanding it just makes the plastic bond better. It doesnt go "out of specification".....
The job is already done so I'm not going back... I'll post pictures.

You can still see sandpaper scrapes up close, but from a few feet it looks good enough for me.

Spent way too much time sanding that crap. Probably 5 hours total. (first ruining it with power sander to remove chrome, then making it worse trying to make it better, then painting thinking it would look good. Then hand sanding it ro remove paint, epoxy filler, sand, 2 coats of paint.

Im done, really. Pics once it's on the car.

Anyone tried plasti Dip? I was going to sand it but don't think it's a good idea.

Doesn't 3M or somebody make some stripe tape that can be applied over these plastic roof strips to correct the problem?

I just polished mine up with Mothers Scratch Remover, which worked pretty well, but I think they'll fade again pretty soon in the sun.

Yup, most of us has already tried to use all sorts of products to keep the chrome. But, in the end. It always fades. Mine's got so bad that it was basically white in some parts.

That's the reason why most of us end up painting it and getting it over with. It lasts much longer and looks good at the same time.

I asked the nissan place this past weekend how much to place my chrome strips since they are already fading on the roof, and they told me $330. I guess I'll deal with it for now....Pretty redic that a 3 year old car has parts fading away already and they wont even fix them :/

That's exactly why you should either paint or plasti-dip them. It's much cheaper and looks a hell of a lot better than the chrome IMO

That's the way to go if you are already to get your ride painted at a shop. This was actually the first mod that I ever did to my ride since my chrome strips looked like complete crap at the time LOL

feel your pain.

I have the sme problem. I was looking at them yesterday, and i noticed that the top outmost part of the strips is like a plastic coating. I noticed because i could move water around underneath the top coating of the strip.

So i was wondering if anyone has tried to remove the top layer of plastic to se what is underneath? It seem that iti is the plastic top cover that is getting faded out by UV rays..

This is on my list of to do items. RIght now im working on designing a circuit for my headlights..

Yeah, it's just plain old plastic underneath. Some believe that the rear "chrome" strip is actually chrome but it isn't. The only reason it doesn't fade as much is because it isn't bent which causes stress on the paint that they use. Which makes it easier to crack and fade just like any other bad paint job but it's worse. Which is why 90% + of 6th gens have this issue. You should definitely paint it.

Why are you designing a circuit for your headlights? Or is that a mod that your gonna reveal later on...

EDIT: Even if you replace the strips. They will fade again in no time. That's just some advice for the people thinking of doing that.
