Roof wing installation

so I bought my roof wing from shadow speed on ebay, and I have a question or two about the installation. I see that it has the 3m sticky tape attached to it already. my question is do I need to apply the adhesion promoter that is supplied with it or can I just use the sticky tape to apply it. and if I need to use the adhesion promoter, do I wait for it to dry to apply the roof wing? or is the adhesion promoter more like a sealant and I need to apply while still wet. any information would be very helpful to me and I would most appreciate it.

I washed and dried the entire car before installation. Then use 100% isopropanol the top few inches of the rear windshield. Let it air dry for a couple minutes. I used 3M adhesive promoter (06396, sponge applicator). Spread it over the area you are adhering the double sided tape to. Semi dry for a couple minutes then affix the spoiler.

It's my understanding that you don't need to use the adhesive promoter but if you want that thing to stay there ...

Tips:
You'll need to peel away a couple inches of the red backing before placing the spoiler on the windshield.

Make sure you get it centered because the spoiler is about 1cm shorter than the top edge of the windshield.

Having another person hold the other side of the spoiler in place is very helpful.

After installing, apply a coat of wax.

Ok, let's make sure I have this right. Wash the whole car,( of course dry it) then clean window with iPA, let dry, apply adhesion promoter, let semi dry, make sure spoiler is centered, remove partial tape on one side, then finish it off after I'm sure it's even. Then apply wax. Wax the wing or while car

You don't have to wash the entire car. I just did it because I was going to do that anyways. I try to wash it once a week anyways.

In terms of fitment, just take a piece of painters tape to mark off placement. Then have your friend hold down the 'taped side.'

you peel off your end and affix it to the window. if you start on the driver side, pull the red plastic covering off with your right hand, while following behind with your left hand pushing down on the spoiler. Take a break about halfway through and apply some constant pressure to the areas you just worked on.

Switch positions with your buddy and have him/her apply light pressure to the areas you just worked on. Continue removing the red plastic until finished. Make sure to let it sit for a few hours to let the adhesives cure.

This probably works better when the weather is dry and hot as opposed to freezing and snowing. Which is why I waited 4 months to install mine.

WRT to waxing ... just wax it as if the car came that way. If you took your time affixing it t the window the thing will stock.

Oh and important last step ... stand behind your car about 20 ft snap a few pics and admire your new addition.

IIRC 'shadowdspeed' doesn't include instructions ... but i do believe they're on the ebay listing.

I believe there is a link in the listing or in ebay confirmation email. But the above steps are great.

For those who used it, is one packet of the 3M adhesive promoter (06396, sponge applicator) enough for the roof spoiler installation, or should I buy another one (in addition to the one supplied)? I am waiting for my spoiler to arrive from shadow.speed, and would like to have everything ready.
Thanks!

One will be enough. I just used the one that came with the spoiler.

I installed mine solo, just did one side at a time and used blue painters tape to hold it in place while I did the other side

Thanks Ghozt. Yeah, I was thinking of doing it by myself too, but most likely will use help from my friend... at least to ensure the spoiler stays intact during the entire procedure. Can't wait for it to arrive! Will be my first ever small mod done by myself If it goes successfully my next "project" might be the Stillen Lip

No problem bro.

Like Ghozt, I also did it solo. It's wasn't too difficult, but having a friend helping will make it a little easier.

I also did it myself, I would try and bend/curve the wing a little to shape of the glass before installation. Should do it in sections. I peeled a little from the ends out as well I cut the middle in half and peeled it in each directions. The directions it came with is pretty self explanatory. Here is the link:

Read my posts above about the fitment. The spoiler is slightly shorter than the width of the rear windshield. Make sure you get it centered the first time otherwise it'll be cockeyed.

Elevit, it is best to have a helper to bend it a bit to fit. I did it myself and am off by an eight of an inch on one side. Nobody will ever notice except me though.

After 16 months in all weather, the 3M tape still hold firm with no additional adhesive, if that helps.

Thank you very much AlDente67. Yes, I will definitely have a helper with me. Btw, looks like my spoiler is in Toronto already (just five days after placing the order). Can't wait.

This is about the easiest install to complete. Almost as easy as removing the factory grille and installing a new one. Good luck fella's get your feet wet!

Last weekend was warm and sunny and finally I had a chance to install the wing. I like the way this small mod looks, and the installation was rather easy too. I hope it'll hold for a long time.
Thank you very much guys for all the tips and advice, and to the OP - for creating this thread.

LOl. Thanks Funnyman... Was hiding while driving my 98 Max for 10 years. Was never considering applying any mods... that is until I bought the 7 Gen!

I've had my Shadowspeed spoiler now for almost 3 years and the paint on it is starting to get crack lines in it. might be time for a new one soon, debating it vs the Stillen one for round 2.

Did you prime it with flexible primer? Those lines come from the paint not having something flexible to adhere to.

Good to know. I've got a shadowspeed RRS. I've always wondered about his paint process.

I can't speak for what Ghozt may have done to his RRS, but this particular RRS ships paint matched from overseas for about $70.

It's likely that the paint process/quality isn't up to par if there are paint fractures occurring 3 years out.

@elevit That looks nice! I am definitely doing mine soon. I have the white with pano roof so I take it the black roof wing would be a better contrast, right?

Thanks for the complement Propa Teknique. I would have done it in black for the white Max with Pano roof too. Having said that, I think somewhere else I saw a picture of the White roof wing for your setup, and it also looked good. So, in any event, I think you will enjoy this little mod. I like it, even if it lasts only for 3 years

About to purchase one myself, my question is do I match it to my paint (Radiant Silver) or my black tinted windows? I'm leaning towards the silver....

Most people match the spoiler color to the roof. I've only seen a few that haven't.

Personally I'm not a fan but maybe i haven't seen the right set up.

So if you've got the pano roof ... KH3, otherwise K12 all the way.
