CVT failure
Do you have a link to what you read ? I read where they have made changes over the years but can't find out exactly what was done

Nissan developed a thinner pulley axle and a new aluminum belt that's meticulously machined and stronger than the outgoing version, reducing flex. That, coupled with a more compact oil pump, means less pressure between the pulleys and belt, making for a more stout setup. All in, the gear ratio range is an impressive 7.0 for engines displacing anything above two liters, and when equipped with Nissan's Adaptive Shift Control, engineers can program more than 1,000 different shift patterns to span the spectrum from city driving to sport. One engineer told us that the new CVT will continue to incorporate the faux ratios of previous vehicles, but at launch, this gear boxis likely to sport eight and, "if the market demands it, we could even do 10." No, we have no idea why you'd want that, but when it comes to the average car buyer, sometimes it's all about the specs.

I don't have the link but this is the meat and potatoes paragraph of the article.

Either way...seesms like above post might be for new model years coming out. The Max...all 7th gen Maximas have the Jatco JF010E. Doubt they would have redesigned tranny that much within a model run because that all sounds to be major upgrades.

When is the above article dated ? Thanks
I would be curious to drive one of the newer model 7th gens. You all can look it up on any OEM Nissan parts supplier to verify I am correct. 31020-1XE0D is original tranny and was superceded to 31020-1XE2A. 1XE0D was used 08/09 to 08/10 and 1XE2A was used 08/10 to 05/11. Mine still had the parts barcode sticker attached to tranny and it is 1XE2A but build date is 06/10 per mfg label. That doesnt match up at all. Also indicates that new tranny was put into the 05/11 models and after.

I have a 2012 that was literally doing great with city driving and on my way back from a 6 hour trip now keeps going into limp mode at stoplights. Is this a sign of a toasted CVT as well or just in need of a fluid flush/fill.
One thing I did today after driving it to lunch was open up the hood and check the level on the dipstick. I noticed that it was above the top notch, so I think I am looking at a case of it being overfilled and then as I read elsewhere, it is foaming up.
This just seems incredibly crazy because it was fine for two weeks with city/highway driving to work, but a trip at extended highway speed and it going into limp when I stop. I can get up to freeway speed, but stopping and it goes into limp mode.

After an 300zx, an altima, a 2001 manual maxima and the 2011, I no longer recommend Nissan.
Get rid of it soon as you can, resale is another sore spot.

My 7th generation maxima was a loaded, sport package, every option and paid for when the trans started whinning. I Changed the Trans oil and 2 filters then, I traded it on a gs350 awd, which runs circles around the maxima in every metric except mpg.

Nup. Pan gasket from Nissan is $25. Bolts torqued to 70 in-lbs when putting back on. Easy breezy. And yes...recommended. However mine had a very normal (surprisingly minimal) amount of accumulation on the magnets and you see where I am. However it would be good maintenance.
The thing I never did that I will amd everyone else should do is to change the filter. It is not inside the transmission. Nissan says "there is no filter" which is BS. The oil filter looking thing just inside of the wheel is a filter. Held onto transmission by 3 bolts and is called a "transmission cooler filter". It was $7.31 and probably should be replaced with every fluid change at 30k miles. Just my $0.02.

Thanks.
I have searched high and low and I have yet to find this for $7.31. I know this thread is 5 years old, but teh best price I can find for the filter is $35 (Nissan part #31726-1XEOA). If someone has a place to get these for $10 I would like to know where.
