2012 CVT issue?

Yesterday, while driving with the windows down, I noticed a whining noise, mostly with acceleration. As time went on, it seemed to get louder, but would subside at around 1500 rpm. When I made it home last night, it really sounded like how a bad power steering pump sounds when you stress it. However, upon getting in this morning and starting, the buzzing/whining is noticeably louder, even when in park. When I drive down the street, I could tell a definite difference in power. The sound is more of a loud buzzing now, kind of a whistle when giving it some gas. It seems to be coming from the transmission side of the motor. The CVT fluid seems to be at an appropriate level and looks clear, but I have never changed the fluid since buying it with 40k miles. It now has 205k. Any feedback is appreciated.

Couldn't tell you if the non maintenance of the CVT is the direct cause of the whine, but you are seriously THREE cvt fluids changes past due. I would start there.

****...205k??? If he drains that **** it may never run again... It's a crap shoot. It could do a world of good or kill it IMHO

205k, trade it in. As stated, you're looking at CVT trouble. As also stated, a fluid change may expose more issues. If you were around 120k, I'd say do the fluid swap, and if you gotta replace the CVT, it might be worth it. But with 205k...the way I see it you're at the crossroad, is it worth $3000 for a CVT swap for a car that will trade in for less then $2000, or is it worth $1500 to $2000 running as a trade-in? Note that if you bring it in not running, they'll offer you $300 to take it off your hands.

It’s trash. I bought a salvaged CVT, any recommendations on prep prior to install?

Change the fluid. These aren't all that serviceable. There is guy on YouTube that opened one up.
Maybe you can follow that vid. Pine something or other auto repair.
