I was wondering if anyone else has experienced rust on the deck lid molding that houses the backup camera? I have a 2016 SR. It's going in to be repainted on Monday and they'll need 3 days to complete the repairs. I'm concerned that this may be a recurring problem if everything is done as it was originally.

I don't recall seeing this exact problem posted here before. As I recall, two or three folks have had small paint problems, but not near the backup camera. I think I remember one or two of them were on the space between the back window under the high mounted brake light and the front edge of the trunk lid? I don't recall any of those folks finding other paint problems on their cars. If they did, we may hear from them soon.

To correct paint problems the right way does take a few days.

My above statement was posted BEFORE the photos were added, and I misunderstood the problem.

After seeing the added photos and reading the responses below, I do recall seeing this problem where rust stains can be seen running down the surface of the paint. Before you added the photos, I was thinking of rust in place on the surface of the metal rather than a running stain on top of the paint. And, as whit said, this did indeed happen with 7th gens also.

This is not good. They can sand and repaint the painted surface, but if the real problem (sharp metal against soft paint), is not addressed, this will reoccur.

Wow. I'm shocked. It was a well known problem on many of the 7th Gens. How Nissan doesn't address the issue is mind blowing.

Apparently, in my small town, there has already been 3 instances of this very thing. seems like a problem with the maxima for sure.

i think it is because there is no rubber stripping surrounding that chrome trim.
light actually passes through ... clearly seen when dark.

hope repainting will stop it from coming back.
i'd rather receive a new trunk...

Question is, once the lid is fully disassembled, what is actually rusting??? Is it the actual deck lid, a hole for attaching molding, or the molding itself (if it's got metal in it)

i had that on my 2013 altima, and they fixed it and installed 3m tape afterwards and problem didn't came back

I plan on going to the body shop to see the trunk without the molding and how it was originally applied. I will update once the work is complete. I don't want this to be a recurring problem.

the chrome piece expands and contracts to heat...in time this will scratch the paint beneath it causing rust. I had the same problem on my 2011. I noticed it happening on my 2016...simple fix, I installed thin rubber washers between the paint and the chrome trim....you will have to remove the trunk lid lining to access the bolts holding the chrome piece...unscrew the nuts, remove the chrome piece, add the washers, reattach the piece and tighten the nuts ...5min job...the rubber washers are about 2mm thin...works great, no contact with the chrome piece and the car...I agree with the previous post...Nissan should have address this issue with adding some kind of tape at assembly

Nissan has had this issue for years. As stated above, it is the contact of the rear finisher on the paint. Unfortunately, it spans across almost all models. We do about 5 of these a month at our dealership. We have our body shop install chip tape on the new finisher to avoid it reoccurring.

Had rust spots all over the 2004 starting only a few years into ownership. Nissan paint quality sucks donkey *****, and still does.

Yes indeed and has since about 2000, all of my Nissans prior to 2000 had good paint. Since then the paint chips and scratches easily, Nissan front ends since then tend to get that sandblasted look whereas other makes of comparable vintage do not!

I looked at a Platinum today with this problem. The dealer said they would fix it if bought it - if they do fix it, is it something will definitely reoccur? Or if they do it right, is there a good chance it won't reappear?

I just checked our '17 SL (constant winter exposure to road salt). I see absolutely no sign of rust anywhere where the trim piece might contact the trunk lid. I DID notice several very small pieces of some type of black insulator tape placed between the periphery of the chromed plastic trim and the trunk (hard to see without a magnifying glass. Yes, I am **** about detail.) I did not ask that these "rub strips"? be installed and I am orig. owner, so I am guessing it is a factory preventative thing. These rub strip sections seem to me to be the most likely spots for the chrome and trunk lid to contact the body, causing abrasion and rust. Could this contact problem be exacerbated by slamming the trunk closed? I wonder. I have always been very gentle closing ours, if for no other reason than preventing the license plate bracket from slamming up against the trunk (and I think I prevented problems here by installing a couple of small stick-on rubber discs between the license mounting plate and the trunk lid.

I have always approached this as compyelc4 does. I mount small rubber or flexible plastic bumpers on the back of both my license plate frame and the license plate itself, and never slam the trunk lid shut. I have used this same approach on my '00 SE, '04 SL, '09 Premium and '16 Platinum, and have never seen any indication of rust anywhere on the rear of my Maximas.

I will say that, on each of my Maximas, before adding the protective bumpers, closing the trunk, even without slamming it, created such a noise/rattle as to be annoying, and not at all in keeping with a $40K semi-upscale vehicle.

And it has always been a pet peeve of mine to see chrome metal pieces attached to painted surfaces without a protective cushion of some type protecting the paint.

I know this is an old thread, but I just spotted this on my '17. There is a ton of rust behind the chrome piece, some underneath and rust has also formed where the paint meets the top of the license plate. And wouldn't you know my car is just out of warranty. Sigh. Guess I'll have to find out how much the chrome piece costs to buy because it looks like it's wrecked. Last Nissan for me for sure.

Interesting. I noticed this on my 2017 Maxima SV which I bought in April of 2019. I cleaned up the areas I could see underneath without taking off the chrome and I haven't noticed any new deposits after a season of driving it on salty roads.
