Maxima is a bargain compared to the VW Arteon

The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon starts at $36,840 and ranges up to over $47,000 fully loaded.
.. with a 268HP 4-cylinder

Hmm 🤔 never heard of it. Just red about it and compared it. Tech wise... seems the same. Maybe a bit more tech. I like that 12” digital gauge cluster.

This is is more like an entry level luxury vehicle. Maxima is kinda in the awkward position. It’s a Premium vehicle but wants a little bit to be in the luxury territory but lacks material quality. It wants to be a sports sedan but lacks basics of the sports sedan apart from the engine. Wants to be a family car but lacks rear space.( Altimas has more rear space)

so yeah... this VW is made for a completely different public. For people who’s more attracted to an entry level luxury car.

So what sort of public is the Maxima for? :-)

For people who want power, sportiness, style, comfort, space and quality but without having to pay the luxury car premium.

VW's have generally had decent interiors. The late-90s Jetta and Passat were a class above anything at the same price.
However, VW got real cheap - especially on the bargain-basement Rubbermaid interior Jetta of 2011-2018.
I think (not sure) that the Arteon is assembled in Germany (or Austria?).
If it's Mexico or USA (cutting production costs), I'd be leery of materials. Build quality is fine - better than my Maxima... (shot at Nissan)

Build quality on my 2019 Platinum just delivered was better than my 2016. Sorry you have had your quality issues. What have you done so far to get them fixed? As I recall you were waiting for a Zone Rep?
VW comes up with some goofy names! Arteon?

6 year 72,000 mile full coverage warrantee. It's exactly twice as long as the Maxima coverage. You'll pay a little extra for that, but if you're savvy with negotiations you can likely still get the loaded Arteon for about the same price as a loaded Max platinum, but in the end that warrantee is a stunning feature.

I traded a 13 Passat for a 16 max ONLY because of the increased performance. The Passat had a 2.5 inline 5 cylinder with 180 HP. Their V6 was only mid-200s in HP and the Passat was a heavy car.

That said, the quality of the VW was outstanding and very "germanesque," even though it was built in Tennessee. If the Arteon has the same quality as my Passat it will be a competitor in the sporty sedan market.

Nissan does itself no favors inflating the MSRP on the Maximas. Truth be told my $46,200.00 Max Plat went for much less due to some healthy discounts which widens the price spread from the VW Artwho?

Called my dealer 18 times to get an appointment aligned with zone rep.
Thus is low end consumer brands. If it’s not a GT-R, it’s treated like a Versa.

What price gap? I've only seen MSRP for the Arteon, not real world negotiated price after all incentives. So for now it's all guesswork...

A quick call to the VW dealer confirmed that the car will not be discounted much since it is new model. So I guess there will be a large pricing spread vs models already on the ground. Seems like a nice car though.

I dont think you can put much stock into what a dealer tells you over the phone regarding the price of something he doesn't have.

If they don't sell well they will discount to move them. With sedan sales down across the board who knows.

Yeah, unless you're there with every intent to buy the car on their lot...as in a serious buyer, not a lookie-lou, you're not often going to get the real straight scoop from anyone at a dealership. Even those places that tell you it's a no-haggle price, you tell them you're serious and will walk out with a car at 'this' price, or just walk out, they will start the wheels in motion. But to talk hypothetically about a car that isn't even on the lot...it's a waste of time to speculate either way...
