CVT drone and resonators

So today I had time to remove my “ Nismo” resonator which came with the whole “Nismo” catback exhaust setup I got off eBay. I been very happy with ,the quality is really great and it’s stainless steel. Not sure if it’s genuine but the seller claims it is and my sales rep at the Nissan dealership says it’s off a 350z but anyway that’s another story. However couple months after installing the Nismo catback the CVT drone at cruising speed on the highway became unbearable. I never knew about CVT drone until I got my 2017 Nissan Maxima.

I had my mechanic cut off the factory resonator from the factory Y pipe assembly because it is one piece. It fit like a glove into the “Nismo” Y pipe. I took it on the highway and I was glad to hear no more drone. Even though the aggressive raspy noise isn’t there like before it still sounds good not loud. So this got me thinking anyone know about any good aftermarket resonators? I’m happy now I can live with it but I figured I give it one last shot to get this right before I can it quits I still want some more sound but minimum drone. I’m sure there’s a medium out here . Seems like a lot of the drone comes from small resonators. The factory resonator is pretty big.

CVTs don't "drone". It is your exhaust.

I really appreciate your in depth information as well as the pictures so we can better understand your issue. The droning or "mooing" or "bumble bee" noises will appear when you remove or replace the exhaust just as you describe and when the resonator size is out of kilter or gone all-together. At highway speeds as well as take off the noise is just all wrong. Thanks again for sharing your solution.

I had my girlfriend do a drive by in it and I have to say I’m very pleased still sounds raspy. I’m very happy with the factory resonator however I will have my eye out for anything slightly smaller. Anyone have specs on the factory resonator? I wish I would had measured it went it was out.

Cheap exhausts drones regardless of the transmission.

I’m actually very surprised with the quality. It was direct bolt on perfect fit. It is well build with laser etched “Nismo” on 4 inch tips. Anyway it was the resonator causing all the loud droning it is too much like a straight pipe. I want something with a bigger diameter.

I been looking at these two resonators. Right now it’s mild and slightly throaty but I want a more aggressive tone on start up. Moderate noise and most importantly minimal highway cruising drone.
First one the body is 14 inches long with 5 inch diameter. Might be too small.

Second the body is 18 inches long with 4 inch diameter. Leaning towards this one. What you think?
The factory resonator body I believe is 25 inches in length with 6 inch diameter.

The 18 Incher might work and sound a little more refined. Let us know what you end up with

Also found this one. Has 26 inch body by 4 inch diameter. It’s not stainless steel like the other two. This one is aluminized just like the factory one.

By the way all 3 have the packing and core inside.

What you guys think?
