I have a 2017 SL with just under 36K miles on it. Sometime last year we started to hear a pop noise coming from the rear passenger side, when going over various bumps in the road. They found the issue and made some adjustments to the strut. All has been well. No issues with that. But recently we have started to get the same pop under the same circumstances on the rear driver side. Took it in today to have some services performed and the pop investigated, and they are replacing the strut instead of doing the adjustment that was performed previously. They advised that due to the mileage/wear this was the best option.
Which brings me to the obvious question. Would it not be advisable to replace both struts now, and not have one new one and one old one? Would that not cause adverse effects in the future and may lead to having them both replaced at the same time then? It doesn’t make sense to me to do one and not the other. Note: The replacement is under warranty and of no cost to me. So I don’t know if this is a battle I even need to try to fight. I did also bring up TSB NTB17-107 as it describes the vehicle symptoms perfectly. But this was the service department’s solution. Any info is appreciated.
Mileage is low enough, it may not be a huge problem, but yeah, if I could convince them to go back to the warranty and get both replaced under warranty I would argue that point. Here's the thing, you are at the very end of your warranty, if you haven't had any major work done under the coverage, it's likely possible once a live person on the other end gets involved, they will just approve it. Kind of like when I had some other work done on y 07, water pump was off for that job, they went back and got Nissan to replace the water pump part since they were already covering labor anyway. Nothing wrong with the water pump, but this was the extended warranty, so I was well over 70k. Was a 120 part, they just said yeah, considering the other job was much more than that.
You may want to consider adding the extended warranty here as part of your negotiation as well. In that you still want the other rear shock replacement covered, but you'd be willing to extend the warranty to give them incentive. That way if you're still out of pocket, at least it's for the full coverage out to whatever, instead of just replacing a perfectly good shock.
Also, you keep saying strut, struts are typically in the front, pretty sure the rears even on the 07 are still shocks.

Well that’s what the SA called it. A strut. I thought it only had shocks in the rear as that’s what the original repair order the first time around said. I already have an extended warranty on the vehicle so I can’t leverage it that way. I’ll talk to the Service Manager today and see what my options are. They have to order the part so I have a little time to see what my options are. Thanks for the insight.
