Ignition "start" button fell inside - WTF ?

So I went to turn my car on today and the START button actually feel inside inside the console. I'm about 4k miles out of the standard 3/36k mile warranty so I'm assuming this won't be covered (calling later just to make sure).

Does anyone know how to access the inside portion of the start/ignition? I'm assuming the great/silver area around it needs to come off but I don't want to start forcefully removing things without knowing for sure.

My understanding is that it pushes in and out. Somewhere on this site there is a discussion about swapping out the push to start switch with a red GTR switch

I searched around but I didn't see any details around how I can access the button. The start button it self cannot be popped out, it goes in deep - almost past my fingers. I'd have to get back there somehow

Oh this is definitely a Monday problem! You know you're having a bad day when the start button craps out! I'm curious to hear how this plays out.

They may do a Good Will repair for you since you are so close to warranty and this should not happen. If your dealer is worth a crap they will try for you.

WW is right on. See what your dealer can do for you on this. Button should not fail like this.

Unfortunately this is for the 7th gen and apparently does not work for our gen Maxima. I almost broke the silver ring trying to pry it open

Any help or tips to open up the "start" button section would be greatly appreciated. Scratched up the area pretty good trying to pry it open but it looks like I'll do more damage without knowing what to open first.

I've been in there twice, it's pretty easy. Just pull down on the shifter boot to separate it from the shift ****, remove the retaining clip, lift off the shift ****. Then open the center console and start prying up on the console trim piece, work your way from back to front. It takes a pretty good tug. I think there was a video on removing the stereo in the "Apple Car Play" thread that should be helpful since you have to remove this piece to get the stereo out.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to get in there right before I saw this post but you're 100% correct. Just popping the plastic from under the arm rest and moving the shifter off of park. Ignition button popped right back into place and looks "sturdy".

Thanks all!

What ever was wrong with the previous manual start design?

I think you should pop that button out and put in an old fashioned crank. Back in the old days that's how folks started their car... a few folks here might actually remember those days
