That an AE tranny then? Nice work man but you spent $1300 more than you needed to. I did my swap for $2200 with all the right parts.

Here's a little time saving tip.

There is no need to remove the auto brake pedal and install the 5 speed brake pedal. Just use the 5 speed pedal cover as a template and use a saber saw with a hack saw blade to cut off the excess pedal material. Put the pedal cover on and voila!, a 5 speed brake pedal. Takes about 5 minutes.

Well at least its started. Dont worry it will be back on the road soon and all the waiting will be worth it.

BTW what flywheel did you order?? Was it an oem or an aftermarket like fidanza??

No, its a 4th gen lsd tranny... not that it really matters since they are almost identical in every way.

I probably could have done it for less by using more used parts. Infact, the only used parts were the 2 shift rods, the 2 pedals, and the 2 hard clutch lines... Everything else was brand new.

figured out the problem with the flywheel. They updated the design to the flywheel and now uses shorter bolts (my guess is the same ones for the automatic) they didn't realize till now and after they got me the original bolts.

not sure if anyone mentioned this but it seems like you didn't take out that huge pilot bushing for the auto flywheel. the bushing that goes into the crank shaft.. i've heard people that haven't removed that during 5 speed swaps, but i took mine out..

Thanks for the info and help. I already own a set on hole saw and step bit. Do you really need an angle drill? If so I'll just probably borrow my cousin's air powered tools to do this.
Time to visit the only dealership in town on my next day off.

I didn't pull that auto bearing out and had no problems.

Just and FYI, the 5th gen trannies are far stronger in the all important third gear.

I did what stephen suggested for the pedal. Works great. But its nice to extend it over to make hell-toe easier.

I didn't use an angle drill, but using one would really make the job easier..

Wow thats suprising... the manual flywheel bolts are about twice the lenght of the auto drive plate ones. Did you use the part number I gave you for the flywheel bolts?

Huh?? Pilot bushing in the crank shaft?? There was not any thing there. I've pulled the tranny several times on my friends factory manual 96 and his crankshaft is exactly like mine. My clutch alignment tool fits perfectly in both his and mine so the diameter of the inside is the same.

Maybe there is one in there further back in the crankshaft??

I dont think you need the angle adaptor, but it sure made my life easier.

Nealoc187 squashed that rumor... along with needing 5th gen axles if youre going to use the 5th gen tranny.

they looked it up and gave me the same parts that you gave me part numbers to which are now wrong. The flywheel is not the same as the old one and needs the shorter bolts.

when converting u only need to replace the driver side axle unless u swap in a LSD tranny.

Where? Why do people always bust 3rd in the 4th gens but not 5th gen trannies?

He had a pretty good thread about it in the 4th gen forum not too long ago. It was a good read.

In all my browsing of this forum and even in my own experience i have never came across any instance of anyone breaking third gear in a 5speed maxima. All tranny problems i have seen are bearing related.

Nope. Neal disproved this not long ago. He opened up both trannies, all gears are identical, only difference is a double synchro for the 2-3 shift.

Ha. I blew 3rd gear AND first gear. Shredded, little pieces of gears blocking the shifter from going into 1st and 2nd so I had to start in 4th gear.

Neal popped 3rd gear also not long ago.

Thanks for clarifying man. Okay, so the actual third gear is the same strength but it blows out because it doesn't have a double synchro.

What exactly happens to cause the gear to "shatter"? How did you bust 1st?

The gear is exactly the same - 1.272 and 14.33 mm thick I believe. Double synchro, rest is identical. It shifts smoother, probably with they don't blow as much. My vq35 likes to shred gears and I drag race alot but since I do the work myself it's not very expensive to fix. Individual gear sets cost me 40-50$cnd.

Anyone want to make me a parts list with OEM Part numbers?
And the 5th gen clutch is the clutch of choice nowadays I see. It it works fine with teh 4th gen tranny, correct?

if i had to do my conversion all over again, i would definitely think twice about the clutch (i went w/ act stage 1, but didn't know about the 5th gen clutch @ the time). it's definitely close between the 5th gen clutch and the act.
the 5th gen is definitely less expensive and will probably last longer, but the act has that harder clutch pedal feel and i'm sure it grabs harder (i've never actually driven a max with the 5th gen clutch).
