6 speed
Whats definitive on the spacer? Can the SAME spacer work in order to use the 5-speed flywheel and clutch on the 6MT?
IMO if the spacer works its less of a hassle (not to mention the stock 50$ flywheel being only 18 lbs) to use the 3.0 clutch-flywheel combo. Theorically it should work with the same spacer thickness me and broaner used for our S13s with the RWD 6MT trans. But everybody seems to be contradicting one another. Whats the final answer on this one? Will the same spacer work or not?

i attempted to use the spacer. it moved the tob out, but in doing so, the clutch fork was altered so it would hit the drivers side of the cutout in the trans, therefore leaving about 1-1.5" of pedal play.

i believe the spacer can be made to work. it would appear that if the pivot pin was also spaced out some, the spacer would work. but i ran out of time and patience, so i just baught all the 6spd stuff to get the car running.

so i worked a bit today. i got the axle kind of installed. i had to shave down a bunch of the support bracket

heres how far in the axle is


i still im weary of the 5spd bracket working. its just doesnt seem like the axle is far enough in.
also, it would appear that my starter solenoid is fried......great.

Nismology - A 5-speed flywheel with a 5th gen clutch is ALOT cheaper an aftermarket 6-speed clutch and flywheel and doesnt require you to 1) swap timing rings and 2) the stock 50$ steel flywheel is guaranteed to never warp and it weights 18 lbs - which is in the neiboorhood of what AFTERMARKET 6-speed flywheels weight. So IMO the spacer is still worth looking into. Once we figure it out, all we will need are the measurements for the spacer and the whole clutch-flywheel deal with be a heck of a lot cheaper since anyone doing the swap can simply use their stock flywheel and current aftermarket clutch.
In terms of what's cheaper, agreed. In terms of the flat-out better option, i'll stand by statement. Many more options because it opens you up to the world of aftermarket 350Z flywheels/clutches which are abundant. Aftermarket 6-speed flywheels are generally in the 13-14 lb range, BTW.
To tell you the truth, from that angle it looks like it's fine. The metal cap on the axle is just there to keep dust/dirt out of the seal. The seal is made on the axle shaft itself.
i just wasnt sure if enough of the axle splines were in the trans. i think when i get some more money, im gonna get a custom pass axle with an inch added from raxles.

Does anyone know where we can get a good price on a stock 6-speed clutch. Im assuming theres an online source for this since the stock 5th gen clutch can be had for 180$ online. From what Ive heard the stock 6-speed clutch is verrry strong.
another update: the car is very close to being done. the 6spd axle went in, all the suspension is bolted up, wheels are on and its off jackstands for the first time in 43 days.
but im still having my electrical problem. whats happening is, what i believe a bad ground somewhere, but i took off all grounds from the battery and cleaned all of them, and made sure everything was tight.
ill try and start the car, this is what will happen.
1/10- the car will actually crank
4/10- all the dash lights will dim and there will be a spark noise, then all the lights will slowly return to normal
5/10- the starter solenoid will click rapidly.
the battery has enough volts. i attemped this after trying to charge it, and while i was jumping the car.
what do you guys think? any inputs will be greatly apprecated.

well that specific wire is a male connector on the harness and a male connector on the 6spd starter, so i cut off the connectors wired and heat shrinked the wires together.
no they werent before. but they are getting soldered tomorrow. and i am getting a new battery because my battery has had enough.

for the 6th flywheel to work in your 97 you have to get it machined to have the same about of teeth i think theres 180 teeth on thr 4th gen flywheel and on the 6 speed one there 3 4 seperate spots thats what i was told
another update: i baught a new battery and installed it and that fixed the starting problem. the car cranks everytime now. the cps sensor is pretty close but just not where it needs to be yet. heres me cranking it......note the beautiful starter noise.

the first 2 cranks were with the sensor in the normal spot, third was with it as far to the drivers side as i can, and the last was moving the sensor back and forth.

The flywheel

IIRC, some brands dont have the propper teeth for the starter so it makes that noise. Most have been fixed but some brands havnt.
lol, MaxSE5pd, doesn't your flywheel have the bolt-on ring gear from Travis? Isn't it supposed to have the same number of teeth as the 3.0 flywhee? Maybe the starter you're using has a different number of teeth than the 3.0 starter?

ahhhh, lol I see.
I'd still venture a guess that the reason for the sound is the starter being different between FWD and RWD (since he's using an FWD starter with an RWD flywheel).
