3.5" Intake Tubing

Since alot of guys have upgraded to LR MAF housings how would a true 3.5" intake system work with that 82mm LR housing? I'm considering building a 2ft long intake system with 3.5" aluminum tubing, so there will be only (1) transition and that's at the TB (3") entrance. Placing the Maf about 10-12" from the filter should provide for more consistant reading since the turbulence should be pretty smooth by then. Of course a SAFC or VAFC will be necessary but the flow thru this intake should be even better with an I.D. consistantly measuring 3.125" thru it's entire lenght except at the TB entrance! Anyone out there used 3.5" tubing with there LR Maf housing....All I recently saw was frankenstein like.....

This is all going off memory...

The bigger you go the less the Maf will register, obviously needing it to be tuned by something, but there is a point where it goes to large and you will need something a bit more advanced then the VAFC-SAFC.

Also the consideration would be where the TB once again become 3" as well. There was a guy who managed to be a Mustang TB to fit with his 3.5, maybe that with your intake setup would be a good combo.

But going that big might be splitting hairs, not really much to be gained from it, unless you needed everything you could do to get every possible squeeze out of the engine itself.

I remember people were doing it to gain throttle response, but they didnt gain any HP. Money would be better spent on intake manifold spacers if you haven't already.

Got the spacers, all new Oem coil-packs, Valve cover gaskets (while I'm in there...even though i'm not leaking), new breather tube, and cooler NGK Iridiums....Need one more thing...more time to install! Thought it would increase the throttle response keeping the Oem TB but with the larger LR Maf housing and tubing and the ability to flow alot easier into the TB entrance @ low and high speed....More like an accummulator/ plenum chamber!

The last dyno I saw of someone with a LRMAF gained no hp.

Gains with a 3" MAF

I agree with Drunkie, you'll have to improve airflow in other areas (intake manifold/3" cat-back?) before you can realize gains with an even bigger mass air.
