In most cases, NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO. If your subs take a max wattage of 45 or less (which would work for most headunits), then you shouldn't have them in your car in the first place because they won't impress the ladies. What you want to do is find the max wattage each can take, add it up, then go find an amp with that ratting. Please don't get one from pep boys or radio shack, though; go to an audio shop and purchase one (you'll thank me later). As for mono, two, or four channel; how ever many subs your pushin' will dictate that.

Can you run your subs with out an amp? Yes. Will you hear them? NO, not at all. Why would you consider this, just curious? A GOOD amp is as much of a important component to a system than the subs themselves. Don't buy cheap *** amps that are rated at over 1000 watts but only run 200 rms It is really important to run your subs the proper amount of power. Not running enough power to your subs can damage them (or so I've been told) Get an amp man.

Even a cheap sub generally should have 200+ watts available. Your headunit can't put out nearly that much, so it will be so quite that you can barely hear it.

The Bose in the 4th gen sounds really nice as far as stock systems go, but the components are pushed to their limits and as such are more prone to failure than other systems. And stuff is hella expensive to replace.

I think the Bose system in my car is totally awesome...sure it doesn't have a million watts or subs or anything, but I can still get wonderful sound reproduction with excellent bass...who needs subs? The only thing huge subs are good for in a car is rattling windows and impressing people. If you are really into audio it makes sense to pump money into a component system for your home, but I find it hard to justify spending thousands of dollars on making a great stock Bose audio system sound better. Just my .02...

Yo man. I ran a sub w/out an amp while i was workin' for the money and it sounded fine. I took the wires from both rear speakers and mixed and matched 'till i found the combo that takes full power from each speaker. It sacrifices your rear speakers, but works until you get an amp. But amp is strongly very strongly suggested. Not worth a sub if you can't show it off.

Just for fun one day I hooked my W3 up to my Pioneer HU that lets you bridge the rear channels and it bumped....not as much as when hooked up to my RF but it still bumped pretty good

It'd probably be cheaper to hire a midget or monkey to sit in your trunk and pound on the trunk walls in tune to the music than to buy subs and run them w/o an amp. The monkey may need more training but will probably be more accepting of the permanent nature of the position.

I dont know what kind of subs you guys are running but when my crossover broke, i hooked up the subs (to the amp) without the crossover and it not only sounded like the speakers were flatulating all over my trunk, but like the speakers were about to explode. You need to have a decent amount of rms power to quench the subs need to bump, and it cant be at 20Khz!
