How about a Pentium 133 machine with Linux/Unix on it in the comfort of your own home?

Depends on what type of DSL line you have and what kind of traffic you're expecting.

Yea, it depends on the flexibility of the service and the upstream capabilities.

Sorry I don't know of any real major hosting sites out there for something with the size of like, an mp3 collection, or else I'd suggest a couple. Know any big computer geeks that will let you do it on their machine(s)?

hehehehe

well i host a cstrike server, my website, ftp, and a few other temps off my cable modem.
my webserver is currently under a rebuild, which is the same as my ftp. the cstrike is up though.

if you want a machine, i have a P3 500mhz but no case to it which could be fun, depending on your creativity, i was going to use it in my car but im having a hell of a time with my LCD (from a laptop).

Also, if you want a hard core board, i have a Tyan 2460mp forsale, i actually only used it for a few days with one processor, i didnt and dont really want to fork over the money for extra processors, i dont really need it so....
that would make a pretty sweet machine, if you need that much power.

anyway let me know, maybe we can just trade parts for your security system?
MrGone

btw, wireless lan on your laptop would be pretty sweet for just hanging out around your house and what not.

You dsl line will likely not be able to handle the bandwidth if you get a lot of people downlaoding at once. DSL upload (128 Kbps) speed is much slower than download (aprx 1.4 Mpbs), the other problem you will have is your assign ip address will change. Most dsl & cable change your ip address every 2-8 hrs.

Who was it? I don't know anyone offering such deals unless your willing to pay more than the normal $50.00. I have directv dsl with 1 static ip address. Most of the old dsl companies are out of business. I would love to get 8 ip and synchornous for $50....please tell me who.

thanks

There's WarFTPd.

As far as IIS/XP goes, which XP do you have? I'm not sure for Home but the Pro version (as with Win2k Server) has a simple ftp server included.

You basically have to create users for the system itself. Thus why it's not a very good idea to use it in the first place (security risk)

I use the regular IIS win2k ftp, only a couple accounts with 8 char passwords or you can just set it to use anonymous( no account needed). All drives set ntfs with different premission. WS ftp is also pretty easy to set up.
