Need advice on amps for W7 subs

W7 12s is what I want, but 10s are a possibility.

Okay guys, this is my dilema. I have not bought anything yet. Trying to find the cheapest place to buy the stuff.
So tell me where I can get a JL 12 W7 the cheapest from (I have looked at EBAY, not alot of reliable people). And what Amp should I get.

I am considering 2 W7s, but might just get one. I have a place that will do a custom install for my W7s into a custom box with light, plexi, etc to make it look like part of my trunk.

I am deciding between a JL AUDIO 500/1s if its powerful enough or JL audio 1000/1 (hard to find) and expensive, or Rockford 1000.1 or 1500.1, maybe even a JBL 1200.1 but not sure how that will do with the JL speakers (But I have heard great things abou it. Most people recommend a subsonic filter for this if ported?). Any ideas would help greatly!

I want to show it off sometimes, but its mostly for daily driving. But when I want to turn it up and get away from the car and let it shake others, I want the ability to at least make me twitch. What do I need?

save your money and just get 1...I did a 12w7 slot ported that he built box for and installed in 300m and he is hitting 152 on the dash outlaw...that thing is so loud...you can't breath..I don't know if you actually know how loud 152 is....but ...you won't need 2
he is powering his with a 6500d mtx and it is getting somewhere in the range of 700 to 800 watts...birthsheet says 818 at 14.4 for his amp but that is 14.4 not sure 300m's electrical system is 14.4 constant...I would say anywhere from 500 to 800 watts..wouldn't go over that for a daily driver sub...
mtx, jbl, crossfire,jl 500/1 would be good too

just got to thinking more about this and I have to take back my thoughts on mtx...it was o.k. in his setup but don't know how long the mtx can play at 1.5ohm(w7 is a dual 3 sub)I would hate to recommend it and it fail...but like I said, it works and as far as I know, still is...lol..he hasn't called yet if it's not
the sub has a power band of 500 to 1500 being red zone for that sub...I would still say 600 to 8 or 900 will be sufficient but a 1200jbl would work if you were careful with it..you could also look into memphis audio also they make a nice d class amp and they are little as hell st1000d I believe is the model

not to rag on jl, but i dont really care for the sound, or the output of the w7's. i decided to get an adire audio brahma 15" instead. in terms of linear output (the point where the amount of distortion becomes offensive), the brahma 15 outdoes the 13w7 by a little bit, and it only costs 429 vs. the w7's 950 retail. maybe youre set in your ways, and arent gonna consider everything else, but this could save you some money to use for something else, and youd have something a lot more rare than the w7's.

I got 2 12' shivas sealed right now and they pound as hell. I'm gonna sell those and get a 15' brahma ported though. I hope those damn things arent on back order as they always are.....grr....

Wow I am impressed. I have considered just one sub. Just the amp quality I am not sure on. I want to make sure when I get the amp, I am gonna use the same brand for my speakers as well when I upgrade those next.

Well the W7 only has 11% distortion. That is the lowest period on any sub out there I read. Everyone says supoosely its the ultimate sub.

Update....

I just purchased one single 12" W7. Now will the JL 500/1 be enough power? I hear people hitting 140s+dbs with this combo. So I think that would be plenty loud for me eh? hehehe.

I've heard people say the 500/1 is underrated somewhat. Even so, take a look at this chart:

http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/RP_Chart.html

even 550W rms would be just in the green, or minimal range according to that chart. But if its in the green, it's still OK for the sub. Recommended for maximum performance and reliability looks about 750-800W rms.

Russ, run the JL 1000/1, not the 500/1. I've tried both at my shop and the 1000/1 sounds better. JL Audio designed their amplifier line around these subs.

PM me and let me know what price you are getting....

im interested in where you got this information, cuz there isnt a single number that coincides with the distortion.

distortion comes from a decrease in control over the woofer. when at rest (in the center of the gap), you have 0% distortionor 100% control. as the driver moves, distortion will ALWAYS increase. the reason that i suggested the adire brahma, is because the point at which the motor's control of the cone hits 70%, the cone is further out than any other speaker for sale right now (of those dumaxed anyway--which includes the w7's).

the w7 is still a conventional speaker, regardless of the new innovations they brought to the market. the brahma is a totally different design than the standard motors, and as a result, you end up with better sq, and the ability to have more spl (b/c spl is more a result of box than anything else ).

I just got the 500/1 for 275 slightly used. And the speaker 12w7 for $400 1 week old.

I heard the 500/1 pushing a 12w7, and it hit very hard. The 1000/1 are hard to come by and I dont have the funds to get that amp yet. I rather try the 500 for now and see how it does.

I forgot you can get stereo stuff! doh!

Next time I will give you a email.
