Radar Detector

Can anyone give advice about radar detectors?
I was thinking about geting one, but I've heard that the police In my area(NY Orange county) use instant on radar.
Is there a good radar detector that can overcome this?
Thanks
Wayne

i don't use radar and i dont knoe wat's the latest out there...but there was this show...i think it was some kind of import show on tv...they worked w/ specific cops w/ different radar/scanner/laser to clock u speeding...and they had peep w/ different radar detector...wat happened was that...they found out that the detector does work..but by the time the detector detects the equipment it's too late...they had already got clocked because it only works when the cops equipment was turned on...when the cops equipment is on standby or off mode...the detectors dont' detect it...so i say its pratically useless...

There have been a bunch of posts about this, so I'll summarize:

Good input about Valentine One and Passport 8500
(Valentine is supposed to be better, but more $$ and HUGE)
(Passport in my experience works great)

A radar detector will not help you if:

you're alone on the road, and the officer uses instant-on
if he's using laser (detector goes off, here's your ticket)

Radar detector's are most helpful if:

there are other cars on the road and they get hit first, and/or
another speeding car is in front of you to take the hit

Yup, pretty much everything Maximax2 stated above. I had radar for a few years, during which I accumulated three speeding tickets. All three were from the cop using the instant-on radar. On the other hand, the radar also saved my butt numerous times. I sold it to a friend because I concluded that the false sense of security it gave me just made me drive faster.

Thanks for the advice
I probably not get a radar detector after all,
I would probably just get a false sence of security like what JeffesonM said

Unfortunately you can't use the search function or you would see about 2 million threads about this.

The only person that's remotely on the right track is Maximax2.

In a nutshell: You get what you pay for. It does not turn your car into a stealth bomber (invisible to radar). It is not a permit to speed recklessly. It has limitations. It requires a little brain power to operate properly.

I could go on and on, but if you want more....just ask.

Just to give a little more info about "instant-on" radar:

It can be defeated. The main difference between instant-on and "regular" radar is the duration. Not even the bands are different (frequency). In other words, if your detector can see it on, it can see it on for a very short time (instant-on).

The key to defeating it is knowing your RD and knowing your surroundings. For example, if you get a weak signal that lasts a short time...that's a sign of an instant-on trap, possibly. This is where a V1 outperforms an 8500, with the arrows and sensitivity you can easily recognize the threat.

If you are by yourself or the car directly shot with instant-on or laser, there is NO chance regardless of what unit you have. Your only chance is to get the signal when someone else is being shot at, period. That is the only basic reason behind a RD.

I know people say the tat radar jammers ar bogus but a friend of mine got the k-40 (the one the goes in your license plate) one a couple years ago. We were driving at about 55 through a construction zone on the highway where the speed limit had clearly been post as 30. Sure enough there was a cop hiding, and he clock us but the k-40 block it I guess, because the k-40 has little light that blinks when you jam a radar gun. I don't know if we got lucky and it sometimes works or whats the deal, but it did work that time, because it definitely said speeding fines double, and the cop was out to get as many people as possible. ANyone know anyhing about these radar jammer/descramblers?

There are tons of articles and TV shows where it has been proven that passive "jammers/scramblers" don't work. I saw an article a while back where a "jammer" couldn't jam a cheap old school radar gun even at 5 feet????

I don't know about your buddies situation, maybe you got lucky for some reason, maybe he was there as visual deterent...who knows? I personally would not depend on something that just sits there and does nothing when it comes to my driving record/insurance.

Been there done that already. Now I'm old and like my low insurance thank you.
