actually... i have a mp3 deck, but i have been downloading songs, and rippin / encoding to mp3s way b4 i got the deck, all of the programs above cant compare to the next 3 progs i will tell you about. check out Xing mp3 encoder, its one of the fastest, then Lame Encoder, and Blade. If you want try downloading either Audiograbber, or AudioCatalyst, or Xing mp3 encoder.
the popping sound you are hearing is coming from either you trying to rip at too fast of a speed, and then that will make a popping, or a clicking sound. Try ripping at a slower speed. and audiograbber and i think catalyst both have filters which can filter out the pops and clicks. and the last thing you might want to try is, some cdrom drives will extract cdda(compact disk data audio) much better than others i.e. faster, more accurate, less jitter correction, etc. I have 2 drives in my comp. and my dvd drive rips almost at 20-26x with no errprs. while my cdr driver rips at about 8-16x. last but not least upgrade ur comp, maybe ur databus is too slow? so when all of the data is coming from the cdrom driver, the comp cant handle/write it so fast so the popping and clicking becomes evident on the wav/mp3. any questions feel free to ask, and if you want i have a private server with over 5,000 mp3's online and the whole nine so if you need music, and would rather download it holla at ya boy....

Lame Encoder is what the whole world uses to encode mp3s. Xing is garbage and so is blade
this is to unibomber.
Actually Xing is one of the fastest mp3 encoders, if not faster than lame. but before you speak negatively about xing, what facts do you have supporting your statement, or is it just opinions? i like speaking on facts. and its a fact that xing is on top for quality and speed, as a stand alone mp3 encoder, even when its paired with audio catalyst. lame's source code was originally freeware and spread by popularity due to the fact that it is good, but free/cheap. if your speaking of price, then you cant go wrong, butif you're making your judgment on price as the ruler for quality, you might come up short.

btw, if anyone here wants access to over 5000 mp3's, and programs and etc... holla at ya boy casa, who got that FTP server on lock.

Heh i have over 3800 MP3 CD's. Ill stick to my lame and you stick to your Xing.
Facts are facts and opinions are opinions. you take the exact same song and you encoded it with each encoder and go play it in a car stereo, then tell me which you think is better

you had originally asked about a mp3 ripper, no such thing, there is a cd ripper, then a mp3 encoder. like i stated before, you should try RIPPING at a slower speed, and you should be ok. and regular cd quality is about 128 kb/s, anything higher is good but not necessary. as a matter of fact to test my theory... rip a song first to wav format and then listen to the song. you should hear the pops and the clicks in the wav, and then from there the encoded mp3 will only pick up what was created into it.... any questions on these let me know, if you need any of the programs we are speaking about let me know, i have em all, as i run a server...

thank you everyone for thier help. it doesn't sound good when i rip it with my regular cd drive but it sounds good when i rip it with my cd-r drive. i'm just ripping it straight to an mp3 file, not to a wav file and then converting it to a mp3 file but it's working fine.
