Hey Ed.... why not build a mdf ring and make those 6.5"s fit ? I dont know but i bet there is enough space if you make a buffle to make them fit.

I have the diamond audio hex series in the rear.. Their 6.5" and do fit. You just need to dremel the housing out a little bit..

No thanks.. too much hassle for rear fill..

If i use MDF to make it fit, i don't think it will clear the doors

My 2K1 has 5.25s in the rear doors. Making 6.5s fit would be fine for some, but you're not gonna really benefit much if you concentrate on your front speakers and merely use the backs as rear fill like most of us.

I don't blame you...I wouldn't waste my time trying to make 6.5s fit back there. Now my FRONT speakers are a different story. I have 8s just waiting for me to get some spare time to put them in.

Ok, now I was looking in Crutchfield site "who fits my car" and it says :

2000 Nissan Maxima w/Bose front: 6 3/4", rear: 5 1/4"
2000 Nissan Maxima w/o Bose front: 6 1/2", rear: 6 1/2"

so depends you have Bose or not , diameter of hole in the door is diferent ? hard to believe..

It's quite possible the only thing different is the plastic "basket" baffle they mount the speaker to. Really, the only thing that protrudes into the door cavity is the speaker's magnet, which is most likely very similar in size whether it's on a 5.25 or 6.5. Nissan just grabs the appropriate baffle depending on which speaker they're going to install...? It's only when you start putting an aftermarket 6.5 speaker back there when you may run into problems. However, as Pearl96Max stated, he's done plenty of installs w/o problems. It may be more work to fit a 6.5 in there, or you could drop a 5.25 in there without any modifications. Depending on your level of skill, patience and devotion...it's your call.

Here is a picture of the Focal coax speakers I put in my front and rear doors. The white baskets are the stock ones put in by the factory. The front doors speakers were 6.5s and the rears were 5.25s.

Thanks for explanation.

Mine doesn't have white brackets like setup with Bose has. Just speaker and bracket together in one piece.
but I think I'm gonna do like releasedtruth mentioned - to dremel old speaker from a plastic bracket and put new 6 1/5" in all doors.

Or maybe anyone knows where I can get brackets like these on Bose speakers?

I cant belive you guys are arguing with Don, if you dont feel like your able to put 6 1/2" in there DONT. Obviously other people have put 6.5" speakers back there. So stop beating the dead horse, and go return your 6.5" for 5 1/4~!

I believe you that a 6.5" will fit.. you just have to modify the plastic piece or just make your own wooden baffles...

But it was more work than i wanted.. i figured when SOMEBODY SAID 6.5" it was a direct drop in, but its not..

I have the ability to do all this, but i am just so ******* lazy..

No one is arguing with Don. There were clearly 5.25 speakers in my rear doors. Yes you can fit 6.5s in there.

not that hard at all...takes less than 5 minutes to make the cut out. use the sotck speaker as your template and that would be your outer edge. your inner cutout would be whatever the new speaker dimension was. this particular mdf cut out was 1"

Does anyone make brakets all setup for the 5 gen Max and 6.5" speakers? Kinda surprised Cruchfield doesn't... Also, I wanted to keep my head unit and replace the speakers. I am worried that if I do this, hy head unit will be underpowering my speakers. Where would I add an amp to make this as simple as possible? Also, what do I do about the existing componant fronts? Where is the crossover for those tweeters in the pillars? Is it built into and fed directly from the factory head unit? Any ideas?

if you want brackets, i can make you brackets. for the front and the rear.
the xover for the tweeter is a VERY VERY VERy small resistor attached onto the bracket of the tweeter. pull of your a-pillar and lok at the tweeter. now look on the side. you'll see a small round cylindrical looking POS. that's the "crossover". yeah it's not that big. but it also isn't that good. in fact, it sux a lot.

if you want to keep your stock head unit, you can put aftermarket speakers, but i can tell you it won't soudn good at all. you'll lose a lot of your bass since most aftermarkets are made for mids/highs so you'll want to add a sub right away.

So, did you remove the factory tweeters? Did you re-install new ones, or just use the door 2-ways? Not sure whether i should be looking at componant speakers for the front and replacing the tweeters or just installing 2-ways in all 4 doors... Ideas?

my stereo add-on was in 2 phases. first, i just swapped out the tweeters. a lot of guys did this and were happy. and yes, i did this as well and just the tweeters alone improved sound quality. it didnt' make it LOUD, but you were able to raise the volume past what you were able to raise it to before. so in THAT sense, it got louder.

that was only temporary though. my real setup is diamond audio hexes up front. mid in the door, tweeter in the pillar, and the crossover is mounted in the trunk. yes, i have speaker wire coming from ALL the way up front to ALL the way in the back. from EACH door. it's a lot, but well worth it as far as the speakers i chose. i seem to get one main compliment out of my setup. it is not insanely loud, but it is most DEFINITELY one of the clearest systems. i can raise my volume up to 70, blaring in my ears, and not one touch of distortion.

hope this shows you the flexibility. you want a system, you've gotta put out some $$. can't just cheat your way and think you got something nice. good luck with everything.
