aftermarker sucks compared to bose
I installed a sony cdx-m850mp using the factory bose speakers and subs and the sound quality is considerably worse. It sounds decent but not as good as my bose hu. Also, once I attached my aftermarket hu, the volume got messed up. The lowest volume i could have (1) is still loud and the speakers seem like they're gonna blow at like 8. The max this unit can go is like 40. So im wondering wats wrong. I used a converter that matches the car also and crimped and taped the wires up. Is it just that it isn't compatible with bose? i dunno, any help would be great. Thanks.
Bose = good? Are you serious? You must not listen to music all that much, the bose in the Maxima is horrendous compared to good aftermarket stuff. Anyway, yeah, remove the Bose speakers, that's key in getting good sound.

No highs, No lows, it must be Blose.

If you want to integrate into the Blose system, you should be using an adapter. If you just wired it up to the harness it will have all kinds of problems with pops and hiss and mismatched volume levels. First off, of all the radios to replace the factory one with, Sony is one of the worst sounding radios on the market. You really need to change all the speakers, and it would be best to run an amp to them to get better sound than the Bose. The Bose subs should also be done away with for an aftermarket replacement, just for less problems, and ease of wiring. It really sounds like you jumped in to putting the radio in without consulting anyone that could have pointed you in the right direction. Have the courage to ask all the questions to a qualified (not Best Buy or Circuit City) salesman, and you won't have these issues next time. Do it once and do it right.
First of all, don't buy Sony. Second of all, purchase the PAC ROEM-NIS2 from www.affsave.com and use the stock bose amp or completely change out the mids and highs.
You'd be best off to just take out everything that says "Bose" on it -- head unit, amps, speakers -- and go with a good head unit, amps and speakers.
I have a harness in my Maxima and it sounded great for about 2 years. Now all four speakers and/or amps are crapped out. I have an Alpine head unit and the HU and harness were installed by someone I know personally that's a top-notch install guy at a major stereo shop.
but, to each his or her own...

and lots of people don't realize that just because they are a well known company that make lots of good stuff, that their mobile division licks. As nice as it seems, it will eventually break.
I had a Sony Mobile ES HU (It was better than most of the stuff they make now) before they went to that explode crap. It was a decent deck, but not spectacular. I didn't have any problems with it. The sound quality and clarity coming out of my current Alpine is much better. I also had a Rockford Fosgate cheapo MP3 player (RFX9000) in my Pathfinder and I though it was better than the sony equivalent.
Everyone has their own preferences, I guess. My dad is happy as can be with his $99 CD player. ("Better than tapes," he says)

I agree with Red92MaxSE. Back in the day a lot of sound competition competitors used the Sony ES line of headunits. I previously owned an ES head with an external sony equilizer with 21 bands of adjustment and it sounded better than a lot of my friend's pioneers and alpines. I purchased an explode unit recently and was not very happy with it. So I switched to a pioneer. Good luck with the head unit install. With the right converter and all the smart people on this board, you should have no problem getting your unit installed. Your sony may not be the worst choice, since the factory bose system is not the cleanest in the first place.
i too agree that sony's mobile electronics are not great. i have no problems with sony on other products. i have 3 vaio computers and 2 sony lcds and have loved them. i have a lot of sony electronics but i would not and will not ever buy any car stereo equip from them. i have heard them in others cars and imo sony xplode is not up to par with what i put in my car. their stereos even looks like ****.

A lot of the time you get what you pay for. Xplod is for the budget minded. Most of the people who have trouble with the stuff would have as much or more trouble with a HU costing twice as much. A little education and experience can go a long way.

A coworker had a Sony MEX-5DI. All show, no go. He eventually switched to a Pioneer DEH-8500MP (half the price as the Sony, mind you) and his exact words, "Dude, you won't believe the difference. And the feature set is so much better." I concur.

Most of the aftermarket has lowered the quality in favor of a greater list of features. Useless features. Sony reported that they would soon start produceing high quality stuff again in very limited quantities. As in building the product after the order is received. This stuff will likely be well beyond the priceing point of over 99.9% of the population. Their capital is invested in makeing profit, therefore the low quality stuff we see in the stores. But they still have great engineers designing unbelievable stuff. They indicated that they have TV's in labs that are several years old and produce much better picture quality than anything on the market. It's just too expensive for a store that needs display models of everything. Sony has always been able to produce great products. But they always make it too prohibitive for the rest of the market to license the technology. Remember Beta, SACD, etc? Great stuff that Sony markets in a way that does not work in this country. Bottom line in the USA is money and the Britney marketing scheme. People want the big SUV with 24 inch wheels. But their neighbors wonder why it never leaves the driveway, the tank is probably empty. All flash and no go. Remember the line, "I didn't inhale!"?
