XM vs. Sirius

Starting february 1st, XM goes 100% commercial free, they're adding 5 new channels, and beginning in march they will be adding 24 hour per day traffic & weather reports for 21 metro areas. There will be no additional cost for anything, leaving the monthly fee at 9.99 for 121 commercial free channels. Sirius still has 100 channels, 100% commercial free at 12.99 per month. Those of you who have satellite radio, which do you prefer, and those who are looking to get satellite radio in the future, what will you choose?

I've heard both Sirius and XM set-up with a switch to output on the same equipment and Sirius has always sounded better to me. Then again, i'm very sensitive to the slightest variations in sound that none of my friends and family even notice it.

Purely on a Sound Quality stance, i'd take Sirius over XM any day. But being practical i chose XM for a couple of good reasons:

a) It's cheaper by a couple of bucks. Paid in advance, it gets even cheaper.

b) I have an Alpine HU and wanted to keep everything "tucked-in".

c) I use the radio on less-than-favorable terms (e.g. in an automotive environment), so that slight variance in sound quality is negligible given the amount of ambient and road noise in a moving vehicle.

Sirius is revamping their lineup next Monday, January 19th.

I have Sirius in both my vehicles and have no complaints. I have also had very good experiences with their customer service.

I have had XM for quite a while now and i'm happy with it. I'm not crazy about the sound quality but I've never heard Sirius and I can't compare the two. My favorite channel is 81-BPM.

From past posts in these forums I've read that sirius is better quality reception.

I currently have an apline hu. If I sign up for xm, what do I ahve to install to make it work? How well does it work with tints?

instead of the vortex we get moby n: groove armada n: coldplay n: and david gray n: sonofawh0re.. there better be tons of massive attack to make up for coldplay...

anyhoo.. I know this isn't a sirius board, so max related.. I've had no problems with sirius in the past year I've had it. Haven't needed the customer service, so I can't really comment on that, but the programming and reception has been no problems. Now if only I could find a good quality head unit sirius ready *cough* eclipse *cough* i'd be perfect..

If its XM ready then all you need is the tuner box and an antenna with subscription. It works with my tinted windows (35%). I didnt want to put the ugly antenna outside the car so I have it stuck to the rear deck next to the brake light and I get reception fine except when I park in a garage or underground parking lots it might not work all the time.

I second the eclipse motion. I ended up with a panasonic because I knew going in I wanted sirius and that seemed to be as good as I could find with 3 pre-outs. I haven't heard xm in a car so I can't compare the SQ but I'm very happy with sirius and now have it in 2 cars.

I *had* Sirius in my car (dedicated to a Kenwood KDC-MP919 HD), and I have a Delphi Sky-FI hooked up to a home adapter at my apartment. I've had both since July of 02, and am tired of Sirius. I think the channel lineup is better with XM. And now with music channels going commercial free and no price increase it's better yet. I just bought a Pioneer 7500 deck, and I'm going to install the dedicated XM tuner. For what it's worth, I'm an installer, and my customers are split about 70/30 I'd say. 70% for XM and 30% for Sirius.

well is it split just because of the brand of the hu they bought or because they know the difference?

It's because they know the difference. They listen to XM and Sirius first, then when they decide what they like based on channel lineup and sound quality, we take them to the display wall and set them up with a deck.

I have had Sirius in my car for a little over a month now and it's well worth the 12.95/month. I actually listen to satellite radio all day. Eight hours per day online while at work and every time I'm in my car. The sound quality is great and I havn't listened to regular radio since I signed up for Sirius. I can't speak for XM but the link below gives a pretty good comparison.

I'll put my 2c without elaborating. Some facts are screwed while others will no longer apply starting Feb. 1st.

i've been very pleased with my XM.. I've had it for 7 months, and haven't listened to regular radio since. I have the SkyFi system so not only do I have it in my car, I can take the tuner and put it in the XM boombox I have in my dorm. The only time reception is a problem is when I'm in a very long tunnel, or a parking deck. The sound quality is excellent, and I've had no problems.
