5 channel Amp question
5 channel Amp question
Hello I have 5 channel amp..and I was told if I run the front mids, tweets, and rear speaker off 1 channel..same on the right side (using one channel for front and rear), and one separate for the sub that it would be better then running each speaker to each channel..no front and rear fade thou..and 2 channels won't be used..
Does that make sense, they said it would be more wattage?
I am running Polk audio mids tweets, and 6 1/2 in rear..and one JL audio 12 for the subwoofer..
Thanks in advance..

What amp do you have?
I doubt that it could handle the drop in resistance. If you wire 2 sets of spkrs to each channel, you will see a 2 ohm mono or 1 ohm stereo load. Not many amps can handle that for long. Yes, you will get more power, but you will also get a ton of nasty distortion and possibly fry the amp. Besides, why do you want 2 left over channels for?
I would recommend to run the amp as it's designed. Clean power can be louder than more Dirty power. Any decent 5 channel amp should be plenty powerful to get you where you wanna go.
Unless you wanna go into the SPL shootout or something.

Thanks that is what I thought..he just kept assuring me that it would be better and I didn't think it made sense, so I turned to the trusty forum... The system was all hooked up in my Integra and sounded awesome (although smaller vehicle)..Its a kenwood kac 859 and has worked awesome for me hooking it up to all 5 channels and with my ported JL audio 12W3D4 has plenty of bass..I just wanted a third party opinion before finishing the install..I was probable going to switch to 2 amps soon and a JL W7 anyhow. But this will do for now..
thanks for the advice..

he's half right.. you can run the hi-mid-and rear fill on one chanel if you run them in series only. this will keep them stable at 4ohm and the same for other channel..but from speakers you say you have , that's a very decent soundstaging setup. why would you want to waste a good set-up by trying to save amp space.. let those suckers breathe give them there own channels so you can have a little more dynamic control..

Thanks..that is how I am going to do it..use all 5 channels..I am good at hooking equipment up..but not up on any shortcuts..which is a good thing obviously..
I'll just stick to the manuals and advice on the board..was just little concerned I wasn't getting all out of the amp..as he kept saying..
Thanks again..

Just an idea. There's certainly nothing wrong with doing it the way you've finally decided on.
