Time to uprade the audio system soon
I have a '95 max and would like to upgrade my audio setup from the stock non bose sometime in the near future, but would like some input on good products from the pro's.
I have a headunit, but it is an old and not so great quality pioneer DEH-2300. Would this be ok to use with an upgraded system?
I would like to keep it within $500-$600 for 4 speakers and a small sub (8" or maybe 10") and amps to power them. And the supplies needed to install them. Hopefully I can get away with the pioneer, but If not I would have to get a HU too. Is this doable for that price range? If it can be done for less that would be great, but I am willing to spend that much.
Would it be possible to use the HU as a power source for two of the speakers bridged somehow or is this not adviseable?
I really don't need a great system, and I don't listen to it that loud...I'd just like better sound quality. The sub is also just to add a little bass to the music...I don't want a huge amount of bass.
As far as music I really only listen to rock. I'm not sure what this means as far as what is needed and what is not, but I'm sure it makes a difference.
I would like to do the install myself so that doesn't need to be factored into the cost, and my dad's a carpenter so I'm sure we can handle the box.
Any input you can give would be very much appreciated.

i just put in an:
alpine cda-9827 headunit
alpine sps-171a component set
alpine sps-170 full rangers
and boy, it is so awesome... my stockers blew so i need a replacement...
you get a fai amount of bass from new speakers... just get a good set...
i plan to go alpine m350 mono amp w/ type-s sub @ 300w rms because they are local and i can get circuit city to install and warranty everything... and if i have any problems i can go back to them...
thats the con with dealing with online companies...
check around a listen to different setups before you buy them, it will save you money and make you happy!

you should be able to get 4 speakers and a sub and amp for under $600 if you don't replace the hu. With the holidays coming up you could get some good deals on stuff since your not looking for high end. Last year best buy had 2 sub an amp and a box for $99. I'm not sure what your asking about the hu and the speakers bridged. You should be able to run all 4 speakers off your hu

I wanted to amp the speakers, but my HU is 22watts RMS so I thought maybe I could just bridge that somehow to run two speakers and get a 2 channel amp for the other two. I'm going to build the box so that doesn't need to be figured into the cost. Thanks for the replies guys...keep 'em coming. The more info the better.

I don't think you can get more than 22 RMS out of the hu not bad if thats an old HU cause thats the RMS of most new ones. If you buy used stuff you could probably get some components for under $600

It wouldn't be possible to bridge the HU into two speakers to make it like 44w rms (don't know if that's how it works) or something?
my99maxisnice, how do you like those CDT CL-61A's? I saw those on thezeb.com for like $150 (they say normally like $300) because CDT didn't like the color or something stupid. How about the CDT CL-6x's? those are non components right? Where did you get them and what did you pay if you don't mind me asking?
Anybody have a recomendation for a good 2 channel amp since the concensus seems to be that I should run the rears off the HU?

I'm liking the looks of these CDT-61A's so I'd be looking for a 2 channel running 90 watts RMS. Any suggestions?
Is it better to have a slightly underpowered amp or overpowered? It seems like they are seldom exactly what the speaker calls for.

I love em. I have em amped, and the doors sound deadened, and they sound amazing. Great value! As for the amp, I'm pretty sure you'd rather have them over powered then underpowered, because if they're underpowered, it can send distorted sound and blow the speakers.
