you can't depend on your radar detector 100%. it'll just give you a false sense of security. keeps your eyes open, and drive smart.

got the 8500, no tickets so far *knock on wood*

Very good advice.

Got a $60 whistler. 1 Year no tickets...1 Warning (going 120 heh...dumb me..my detector went off, but going 120 things come up quick). Previous 2 years before that, no ticket...no warnings...no radar detector.

The Whistler saved me once (it was night, going down a mountain speeding). Other than that....use your eyesight.

Gents, just to let you know, as someone in the law enforcement field, radar detectors as Fosgate stated, are a false sense of security. As some of you know, we use two types of equipment to track speed...Laser, and radar. Radar is what you typically see, which is hard wired inside, or outside of the patrol car window. Laser, is the portable hand held device, which is controlled using a trigger. I can tell you from experience, if you are hauling a**, and someone is using a laser, your radar detector wont do anything for you, except confirm the fact that you're about to get pulled over!

I can tell you from experience that's exactly what happened to me.

Well, almost. I got picked. I was cruising along with the rest of the traffic at about 80 in a 55. He lit me up and that was it, no warning.

Sorry to hear that MZ. That's why I figured I would put that info out there. Some people don't know that there are two different types of equipment that cops use. i remember when I was 17, and just got my first Maxima, i thought as long as I had a radar detector, I was invincible. 2 tickets later, and about 200 bucks, i started seeing a pattern! It wasn't until i started my new career, that I found all the good info about speed detecting equipment. I am still in the process of talking to friends of mine about certain things that you may be able to put in your car to "jam" or make the laser unable to read your speed. BTW when you get a chance, shoot me an email, I have a question about your control arm bushing incident..

V1 for 8 years. Never had a ticket.

And I have been saved by the laser warning twice. When a cop hits a car ahead of me with laser, beam fragments set off my V1 and then I slow down before the cop hits me. Luckily, laser is rarely used in my area. And since laser is ineffective in the rain, I don't have to worry about laser when it's raining.

A radar/laser detector is not a false sense of security if you have a good one and you know how to use it. It is a tool that helps keep me ticket-free.

Micah,
Good point about the laser not being functional in the rain. I forgot to add that to my post.

First detector- Passport 5000 (yes I still have it, but retired it) got it 8 years ago, 3 tickets, because I didn't have it on at the time. Yes stupid.

Second detector- Passport 8500 (commuter car). Got it when it came out. No tickets

Third Detector- Valentine1 (Maxima, weekend car). Got it last year. No tickets.

With the 8500 and the V1, got hit plenty of times with Radar and sometimes Laser (mostly 8500, my commuter car), saved my butt.
