Amp turning off !
Ok, i have a audiobahn 800t amp and its mounted to my box. I suspect that it is overheating because after listening to it for awhile it goes into protect and turns off for a short amount of time. Please do not flame me to get a diff amp or that audiobahn is crap but just help solve my problem. I have put some spacers in between the box and the amp to help the airflow but it still happened. Anyone else have some ideas? anything is appreciated.

naw, for me to have headroom, it'd have to be 2400w max...my subs are 700w max each, and CRANKED they're not quite as loud as i'd like..with my headunit non fader gain turned up, the bass boosted as high as it'll go, and the crossover set to my taste, and the amp gain cranked, its ALMOST up to my taste
*edit* oh, I've had this amp with the gains cranked all the way for about 2.5 years with no problems, just the occasional overheating if I have it loud for about 2 hours straight. Its a legacy, so I'm not concerned about cooking it.

ooookay...try laying the amp flat so the heat can radiate off more efficiently? what size of cable feeds it? how much open space is around the amp?
I've never heard of audiobahn amps overheating unless they're bridged to an obscenly low resistance or stuffed in a tight space...

its either the location, something laying on it, the way its laying, or the wire gauge. on a side note, a gain at even 1/4 can be clipping pending on the signal it receives and how sensitive the amp is. for example lets say you have a nice eclipse radio with 8v preouts and a jbl amp thats 4v...anyone can EASILY clip this amp based on the radios preouts.

It is on the back of my box because if i put it on the top, the box becomes top heavy and rolls back and forth. I have a eclipse HU with 5 volt preouts. It is a mono amp so i can't bridge it. I have 2 or 4 ga. comming from my battery into a splitter because i am running a seperate amp for my other speakers. After that i believe it is either 8 or 4 ga. whichever fits into the hole the splitter allows.

I have this amp running my Audiobahn ABP12T and let me just say that with all of the bass boost buttons set at the lowest level, i was setting of caralarms left and right. I definetly recommend getting this sub. Oh yeah!, DON'T MOUNT THIS AMP SIDEWAYS. Currently in Bellingham the temperature is 26 degrees and it was getting too HOT and shutting off. Be sure to mount it horizontal on the floor. I AM SERIOUS WHEN I SAY THIS.

ok so now my subs dont work at all. All i did was move the amp off the sub box and onto the floor and now no bass. The amp turns on and everything is connected. the protection light is NOT on and i CANNOT figure this out.PLEASE HELP!

^ no offense but why would you want this amp? also merovi i linked that specific site because of the "writeup" explaining the overheating issues. check all wires on the amp. moreover, patch up the screw holes in the box if you do not plan on putting the amp back on the box in the same spot.

i got the amp because i got a VERY good deal on it and i did not notice anything about overheating issues. I figured out the problem and it was something i dont think anyone would have assumed. For whatever reason i moved the phase switch over and then back to where it originally was and out of no where bass come flooding out. i put the amp on the floor, only problem is the sub is now closer to the end of my trunk. not sure if that causes more rattles. hope not.

typically... the closer you are to the tailights the better the bass response is. however, usually more rattles are noticed. however, in my 5th gen when i have the box up against the back seat there is less trunk rattle but alot more rear deck rattle.

Check the ground. If the ground is loose the energy is transfered as heat and the amp shuts down. Make sure to sand away the paint and put at least two screws through the terminal. Don't use a bolt in the trunk! They come loose and can't conduct enough current. If you moved the amp it might have made it worse. Get a meter and make sure the subs read 4 ohms each or 2 ohms collectively. If your subs are dual 4 Ohm you might have it wired in a 1 ohm load. That will cause that thing to smoke. It isn't a bad amp but it is tempermental. Give that a try.

if you do measure the resistance of the coils, don't be alarmed if it gives you reading a bit lower than the advertised numbers. that's just the Re of your subs. for example, my brahma is rated at 2 ohms dvc, but each vc reads around 1.4 when i tested it with the multimeter.
