Is my amp dying?

Hey, I've got a Kenwwod amp powering a 12 inch JL. Last week, the amp started cutting out, the power light turns off and on. Then today, it started clipping, or whatever you call it, where the speaker hits, without the stereo even turned on. Does this sound like a problem with the remote lead, or is the amp just getting ready to die? Oh yeah, its about 2 years old, 300W max running at 230 RMS. Thanks.

What do you mean hits? Clipping occurs either when the amp is being pushed too hard, or the gain is turned up too high. Do you mean hissing? It could just be that your asking too much from that amp. 230 watts RMS is pretty low of a 12 inch JL sub in most alignments. Pushing it too hard can cause clipping which will kill both your sub and your amp.

I've had it 2 years no problems. Maybe its not clipping, but the speaker makes a repetitive "boom boom boom" sound, even when the stereo is turned off.

Bad ground... or signal pickup from the RCA maybe?

Is this boom boom boom loud? I'd bet that it's some noise being picked up somewhere in the system. Could be a bad ground.

Just got back from the stereo shop. They said the amp is going out. Thanks for the replies.

Did that same repair shop also offer to sell you one of their amps?

Of course they did! But I have a friend who is good at fixing stuff like that, I'm going to have him take a look at it first.

Hey smokeyone, do you know of anyone in tulsa that can fix amps (besides your friend) cuz my kicker (ix406) amp started doing the same thing and there is no way I can afford to buy another amp like that one cuz it is a little expensive for me. I've only seen one for sale for about $450. But i'm hoping the repair cost will be a lot less

recheck all connections. sounds like something is loose, and not necessarily the amp is sending a clipped signal to the sub.

It makes that sound even if I unplug the RCA's from the amp. The speaker still makes the sound, whether its getting a sound signal or not. And the power light flickers too. I'm hoping its just the remote port or something is messed up, something cheap and easy to fix.

90MAXGMG: Not really. I know of 1 little place in Owasso, but I wouldn't even know an estimate to fix it

wait...check the main fuse to the amp. i had a similar problem now that i thought about it. it end being caused by a crappy fuse. the middle part was not soldered on correctly, and was making sporadic contact with the ends of the fuse...making my sub slightly crackle and pop.

check the fuse to see if it's good (or hell...swap in another fuse to test)
